Is It Cheating

I have no experience with fatwood, Is it very sappy to the touch? I'd like to harvest some and put a piece on some 550 chord with my neck knife, but obviously wouldn't put it there if its sticky.

Best way to go about harvesting this stuff? I can't seem to find the search function anymore, must only work when you pay.

Thanks.

To me it's not cheating when it comes to outdoor tasks. Get things done the easiest and most efficient way you can. Be practical. Fatwood around here is not hard to find. It's even easier at Walmart or at the hardware store.

alot of places sell it 5 or 10lbs box or a few stick like goinggear has among others. Fatwood is fatwood no matter how you come across it

I am a far worse offender, I have been known to start my fires with alcoholic and a match. I have even resorted to charcoal lighter fluid. I have used a Zippo and a bic. And yes, even the lighter in the Jeep. I sometimes even carry tongue depressors for kindling.

IMO there really is no cheating, just being resourceful. You either make fire or you don't

I purchased my Jute Twine at Wal-Mart because it was the only place I could find it. I hate going in there. For one thing, everything is so busy in there, it's like I have adult ADHD and I start feeling sick like I'm going to hurl or something. The next time I have to go in there with the airline sickness bag in my pocket, I'll have to get me a box of Chinee-fatwood. :D

Have to agree with you on this one. Every time I go to Wally-hell I feel like I need to take along a body guard and some Ritalin. You just never know what you will run into in the Wally world clearance isle.

I once started a fire with Doc Canada, but he wouldn't let me use a match :D

I would save the deep thought about the legitimacy of that fatwood for when you are sitting next to a nice warm fire...then it won't seem important where you got it from:)

I think of it like this, at least you know what to look for. We were camping with some friends who thought I couldnt burn an old nasty stump, till I did:p

Hell.... I can spot fatwood from a hundred meters and have loads of it on hand....some in my truck and stumps laying around in different parts of my yard and I'll still occasionally buy a pack from walmart because it only costs two dollars and is easier to process into mine and other members of my family's kits in uniform pieces.
