Is It Cheating

I buy fatwood in 25 pound boxes over the internet so I don't have to go in Wal-mart.

Years ago I learned of fatwood as something to light logs in my fireplace. I later went to the deer camp in east Texas and was praising this fabulous wood I bought. A good ol boy led me out behind the cabin and kicked a stump, and said here's the stuff you been buying.

First, let me start off by saying that this is meant with the best of intentions - don't let playing with store-bought fatwood prevent you from seeking local natural alternatives that may work as well.

Also, I made fires for 50 years before I ever heard of fatwood.

Agreed, most areas have their own natural offerings for things, fatwood in some forests, tinder fungus in others, paper bark in others...........Down here it just happens to be fatwood, and few other fungi that don't work anywhere near as well as tinder fungus from what I've seen and read.

Doc,

Yes, but when coming from you - it should be 'Bite me eh?'

Unless you want to blend in with Tony - then it is - 'Hey Goomba! Whydonnya bite me?'

Usually followed with a 'Fogetaboutit....'

Hahaha. That is good.

My box of fat wood said made in Honduras (Forgot if I bought it at Wal-Mart or Lowes). Good stuff. Also drilled a hole in a piece, glued in a piece of ferro rod, and coated the fat wood handle with varnish. I should now have a firestarter that I can whittle part of the handle off of if needed.

Lumber is a main industry in Honduras, and from what I understand it's primarily the Long Leaf Yellow Pine that they grow. I guess someone later saw all of the fatwoodm left in the ground as a sellable biproduct. I used to sell bundles of it at small stores in small towns where a lot of people heat with wood. My hunting grounds were several hundred acres of cultivated pine forest in Georgia at that time.
