Is it just me or Cold Steel knives are general either low quality or overpriced ?

The voyager series is getting a makeover. They will feature San Mai 111 steel,Triad Locks, and treated aluminum liners in the Grivory handles.Looks like they could have a real winner there!

Yep, I can't wait. :D

The New Recon 1 is about the same I believe except the blade is AUS8 with G10 Handles (No Liners) and I will be testing one as soon as it gets here.

At at MSRP of $110 for the 3" they certianly shouldn't fall in anyones "over priced" category.

Handle shape looks a bit angular and odd. Will be interesting to see how comfortable it is.

To be perfectly honest if it were not for the close out price I would never have bought the Rajah I because I did feel that it was a bit over the top to spend that on a knife I considered to be a novelty item at best. Don't get me wrong, I know its a very serious tool in your hands but honestly it is so impractical to actually carry one daily that it is, well, beyond me to comprehend why you would do that? My pistol which I do carry daily weighs less than this knife for cryin' out loud!

Anyway, I think the 2010 Triad lock equipped Voyager and Vaquero, Gunsite, AK47, Recon and especially the American Lawman folders are among the most bang for the buck folders you can buy at this time in a true hard use extreme tested folding knife. You can find Amercian Lawman folders for as little as $62 before shipping if you know where to look. In my opinion you cannot beat that with a big stick! If I thought I could get a plain edge Medium Voyager in the new Triad lock from a dealer I'd already have one but so far I'm not willing to risk the order for fear I'll get the one in the description and picture which is still the older non Triad version. I know the dealers with a full stock of these older knives do not like seeing that but honestly its how I feel. I'll wait until the old stock is gone or until I can snag one used I guess.

I think that every dollar over $50 is high price for a knife made in China or Taiwan . I like many of there knives ,swords and other stuff but I won't pay $100 or up to $300 for a knife made in China and Taiwan , for that kind of money I can gat a very nice USA made knife or even a custom one from this forum ,not to mention the cheep steel they use .

I got a Black Rhino and Spectre on closeout at $99 each that are coming and one of the New Model Recon 1's on the way, all from CS directly. :D

Even at street prices before closeouts they really weren't priced that bad IMO, MSRP was way too high though.

AUS8 and VG-1 aren't cheap steel, nor is SK-5... ;)

It's about how the knives are put together and how the steel is heat treated that matters........

That said you won't get a knife any were near as good as one of the CS knives that are made in those countries for anywere near the same price if made here in the US, they would cost 2 or 3 times as much or more.

They make knives that really can be used and used hard for reasonable prices so they are a good value.

And they back their Products 100%

Unlike some other companies that don't........ :thumbdn:

The Warranty is very important if you really use your knives. :)

i kinda know what you mean ,when i first got into knives, cold steel knives realy brought in my attention. then i thought they seamed gimicy but then i got a ak-47 and a 4 inch zitle tilite but now i love em both.

Cold Steels advertising is gimmicky, there product line is vast with some really oddball stuff, but god bless them for the bringing Andrew Demko's designs to the forefront..Cold Steels AUS8a is good stuff, not on par with latest wonder metals but good and practical, the Tri-Ad lock is a leader, the Recon 1's are on par with more expensive knives, I have the AK47 (gave one to my brother) three Recons (gave one to my little bro for his 18th) both Rajahs and the master hunter, all are in use and great knives...Lynn Thompson is over the top, but he should be its his company.

I think the biggest problem with Cold Steel is their inconsistency. Depending on what

model and where it was made, you have to find out too much about a particular knife.

Some of their knives are great, others depend on many variables.

Agreed. CS went through a phase that most brands who outsource manufacturing do when their main manufacturer goes bust, in this case Camillus.

I bought up a whole load of CS blanks made by Camillus and these are really GOOD. The Camillus CS Kukri blanks are outstanding as are the Colt and Remington blanks, all HT and made in USA.

Starting 3rd week of November, I am having these finished in the Philippines, about 55mins from me and I will put up pics when complete. I was amazed with the first prototypes which showed the steel used in the CS, Colt and Remingtons to be 1st class. Pity they went bust because it was not because of quality.

IMO, the new 2010 CS knives are worth the money and can always be found discounted by quite a bit.

its just you, I think most of CS is great for the money..... of course you get into higher end stuff and you'll give just that, higher end money..

Old thread.

Cold Steal has about the worst warranty in the business, and some of their stuff is extremely overpriced.

They don't make knives, they are a marketing company dedicated to hyping up their wares. They tell everyone that low to mid grade materials are high end, and they certainly sell plenty of stuff to their target market- people who don't know any better.

That and the fact that they rip off people's designs ensures I would never do business with them.

Yeah what rat says, they claim to have the world strongest knives but yet they have the weakest warrenty to back their products up. a 1 year warrenty on a folder that you potentially pay hundreds for!!!??? that is just bad business strategy when you have companies like esee that have great warrenties and arguably better products.

IMO accusing knife makers of ripping-off other people's designs is very easy to throw out but very difficult to prove based upon a preponderance of evidence let alone beyond a reasonable doubt.

Agreed the Tri-Ad lock is THE lock at present and I have a Raja 1 and an AK47 and ripping this one off is pretty obvious.

However if you take the knife designs from the Imperial War Museum and add them to those from the Tower of London, then add to those from Malaysia and the Philippines, you will find nearly 70% of the current knife designs in some form there. Of course add-in the rest of Europe,Middle East and Asia and I reckon nearly 99% of current knife designs can be found in some form in that group.

All of these regions were making knives for war, hundreds of years before there was a USA.

Apart of obvious copying and misrepresentation, I believe that most knife designs are part of the evolution process which is healthy for the industry.

What? Like all the people right here on BFs that say they love their knives? Way to take very thinly veiled swipe at people who you disagree with.

While I find cold steel's marketing to be both hilarious and highly objectionable, I have to admit that the cold steel products I've owned were priced fairly. They were no great bargain, but they weren't overpriced, I'd say.

That said, they weren't what I'd call well-made goods, either. :thumbdn:
