Is it just me or Cold Steel knives are general either low quality or overpriced ?

I had a scimitar that I beat to hell and still had a ton of life left in it...a guy at work was trying to buy it from me for months I finally gave it to him to force myself to carry one of my other knives, and then he beat the livin hell out of it. In all fairness to the question it was one of the Japanese made ones before they started switching over to different facilities and the quality was great.

Thank you for this insightful post.

IMHO, people beat the crap out of CS knives. Why? Because they are marketed to people who will probably beat the hell out of a knife anyway, and if that's their target audience, it's just a plain good marketing/advertising strategy.

Will I beat the crap out of my Emerson Commander? No way, no matter how well deserved Ernest Emerson's "The #1 Hard Use Knives in the World" saying goes.

I like my Emersons, and I'll use them as appropriate, but not totally trash them. When I met Mr. Emerson recently, I told him as much.

I told him I'll do that to my CS knives but not his. While he may not have liked what I said, so what. His knives are not beaters. And so I won't treat them as beaters. That takes nothing away from them, it's just not in me to trash those great knives. Using them hard is not the same thing as trashing them.

Were we to pay attention to some of the groupthink on this board, the only folders allowed would be Kershaw(and ZT), Spyderco, Strider, Reeves, and Emerson. According to some on here, anything else is junk.

They have some reasonably priced stuff, and some stuff is astronomically overpriced.
People keep buying them though.

Agreed. I've been edcing a Black Rhino for many months now, and it has performed to my expectations. No better or worse that any spydie or benchmade I own.

Best time to buy them is when they are dis-continued. I bought the Black Rhino for $64.00, about half price.

some are overpriced, some are low quality, some are pretty decent. CS sells a wide variety of products from many different suppliers.

Cold steel has plenty of junk and a lot of good stuff like any other company. I'd say Benchmade has just as much junk knives.

agreed CS like any other company sells 'entry level' stuff that I think is fairly priced compared to others, they show there knives being used in video's which I think is pretty cool to watch (whether it proves anything or not)..

all the haters are just jealous of CS success.. they are what they are..

and the poster that said they rip off others designs and aren't knife makers?? where do you get that??

they've been good to me..

Well, CS does not make any knives, they are all made offshore by 3rd party.
If they did follow the proper channels with their "borrowed" designs, they sure don't mention it....Emerson openers, benchmade axis type locks, black talon is a blatent Spyderco Civillian copy, Bob Loveless sub-hilt used with no reference to him.....just to name a few.

You really have no clue what you are talking about...

A lot of Companies have their knives made overseas etc.

CS Had Benchmades permission and was under contract to use their lock.

Andrew Demko has a Patent on his vers of the wave.

Bob Loveless wasn't the 1st one to make Sub Hilts.

The Civilian wasn't the 1st knife of that type or blade shape.

You need to do more reading and research before posting so much complete BS on the forum.

The thumb disk opener is patented by Andrew Demko and the paperwork references the Emerson Wave patent. CS paid royalties for the ultra lock & the black talon - BM & Spyderco hold patents for the axis lock & S curve blade shape. First sentence on the coldsteel.com Black Bear Classic page - This classic sub-hilt design fighter was first developed by Bob Loveless, one of the founding members of the knifemaker’s guild.

They copied Strider and ripped on M. Burger in the ad copy. Some didn't like it. I have yet to see any acknowledgment of Brian Tighe for the design of the Black Sable.

They don't always get it right, nor do they always get it wrong.

The Black Sable is Discontinued now so it's gone.

Yeah, buddy of mine bought one on Saturday, Hatamoto is the last of the custom series. I don't know why they never mentioned Brian Tighe for that one, guess he didn't complain about it.

The Hatamoto is gone now too.

Their whole Custom line is gone.

Looks like they are getting ready to make some changes in 2011. :)

I'm an idiot because I can't follow a few simple rules.

That's what happens when they get called out for posting non truths, they usually resort to personal attacks after that.

Childish really.

Actually your whole reply was discredited by the next post.....you basically jumped on me to say "You really have no clue what you are talking about..." only to have the next reply show that everything you posted was made up bullshit.
You also could keep the discussion mature and not come across like such a fanboy....that's more annoying then anything else on this board.
