Is One Blade Enough?

Flexxx, I understand typos and grammatical mishaps happen but c'mon, the word is "accept." ACCEPT IT, SERIOUSLY!

Someone mentioned ultralite hikers who have the mentality of "Oh, I'll just borrow someone else's stuff if I need it." Well, there's a special layer of Hell just for them, right along with used car salesmen, lawyers and rapists.

What you've described is not an ultralight hiker. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, ultralight hikers are actually more likely to have the gear they need because they think very hard about everything that goes in their pack.

What you've described is actually an idiot who just wants a lighter pack... not an ultralight hiker. Those are two different things that a lot of people here keep getting confused.

I learned a long time ago in a galaxy far far away that two is one and one is none.

An old thread... oh well. Yes one knife is plenty. Learn to make your own if you need more. And if you don't like it, then carry several. To each their own. But for NEED you are best with one, or the skills to make one. Better to have both one knife and skill to make more than 30 knives and a .45. But I'm not your typical 'Merican Patriotist who needs stuff to validate my indeependence. YMMV.

From 35 miles with just my CamelBak, to a 12 mile Back pack trip I always have my Vic Trekker and Izula.

I might take only one knife that's as small as my BK-14, but you'll rather find me wearing only a pink bathing suit and nothing else than without my folding saw when I go hiking. Chopping? Forget it. Show me the 5oz knife that will chop down a 5" birch in under a minute. It's folding saw + knife for me, and most of the time that knife is my trusty BK-2. For the winter, I might reconsider this and pack an axe, especially for overnighters.

My Dad is a hatchet/machete/folder/etc. kind of guy. We went camping recently and I have to be honest my BK2 kicked all of their butts!!! The machete wasn't used much do to the environment but the 2 out performed his whole load. The best part was when his hatchet couldn't split a peice of wood and the 2 went through it like butter. There was a nasty knot in the wood but the 2 went through it with ease, the kicker was that there was an old nail right above the knot as well, my old man was really impressed that a knife could do so much! One knife for me period!!! Nothing else can compare!!!

I'm a lightweight backpacker & I only carried a small SAK for years, untill I was nearly eaten by a mountain lion one night.
I'm still a lightweight backpacker, but I don't want to be eaten. So I now carry a b****y big knife to go with my SAK.
At home in the UK or Europe its a Rajah 2, but in the US its a BK9.
So for me, one knife is not enough.

In honor of my recent induction to Gold status...and my love of all things ZOMBIE...

Came across it while randomly flipping through old pages, and figured it was decent enough to resurrect...

I like as many knives as I can comfortably carry. Even if I don't use them. I'd rather have it and not need it than the other way around.

Victorinox alox Pioneer or Farmer plus a light weight ~4" fixed blade would be my standard outdoors carry.

I've run into enough wild pig and some hikers have been attacked/stabbed, more than anything that is why I hike with a big blade and pocket folder as minimum. I don't have to worry about hyper mileage since it's an island :p
