Is spyderco behind now?

You could see it like this: spyderco is that old corner shop where the owner himself is the sales man. This has worked in the past Now, on the same street, there is BM, Kershaw, and cold steel. Three huge stores.
YOU could see it like this: If a company like Cold Steel can be successful, Spyderco will be around for a very long time.;)

Kershaw, Benchmade and Cold Steel have been around for years. They haven't forced Spyderco out of the market up until now, and I don't think they will in the future.

There are two options:

1) Spyderco is falling behind, in which case you are right

2) Spyderco is not falling behind, in which case numerous other people who've been around for much longer than you, people who work for Spyderco's competition (Thomas W), and other people working in the industry are right.

Without having access to Spyderco's financial records you're talking out of your ass by saying they're "behind" or that "the pond is drying". You don't have the faintest idea what their sales numbers are and neither do the rest of us (except Sal). I'd guess that by the fact they are continuing to put out new designs and honing old designs further while maintaining and building their fan base I'd say they aren't behind at all.

Well, its impossible to get into the financial records of a privately owned company. However, its obvious that Spyderco has suffered this year. It suffered a heavy fine from the US government. Its sales were low compared to other companies.

The spyderco factory in Golden is not up to scratch compared to BM or the knives spyderco makes in Japan.

Sure, they introduce new steels but how much r those selling? Its sure easier to experiment with new steels than introduce a new model or have a collaboration with a maker.

Some people here are knocking cold steel. cold steel is having a very successful strategy. Aggressive marketing, and a generalist approach to the market.

The panda bear is becoming extinct because it only eats bamboo (specialist), The bear , the rat, the human, is successful because its a generalist.

The generalists will inhered the world.

When a polycarbonate bat is a better cutter than a knife, it's time to resharpen the knife - Spyderco has that covered.

The coolest thing about a knife company staffed by panda bears is that no steals trade secrets during company tours. The bad thing is all of the lawsuits.

Its sure easier to experiment with new steels than introduce a new model or have a collaboration with a maker.

FYI Spyderco is the one of the companies that pioneered custom collaborations.

19 of the knives in the current 2007 catalog are designed by custom knife makers.

Its sales were low compared to other companies.

How can you back up either of these statements???????

13 pages based on this chuckleheads personal opinions.

Fine, you feel like Spyderco is falling behind, then don't buy them. Go out and buy whatever Brand X knife you feel is at the forefront of the industry. Oh wait, now this brand of knife is the best, Oh wait..... You get the idea? No of course not, because even after 13 pages nothing has gotten through. Now if only Crucible Steel could come up with something as hard as your skull, but not as dull, we'd be onto something here.

I posted a little constructive criticism for Spyderco earlier on this thread, but I want to make it clear that I understand that Spydercos look the way they do and are designed the way they are because Sal devised one of best pocket knives ever.

You could put a Spyderco in the hand of of any man anywhere in the world and he could used it to cut some $#!% in half! Every single one of Spyderco competitors has extensively studied and copied Spyderco. If Spyderco isn't showing a lot innovation it's because they don't need it. Pocket clips, the use of polymers, one-hand deployment, and serration are all Spyderco innovations.

The student may surpass his sansei, but he should never lose respect for his teacher.

Generalist = mediocre

Mediocrity accounts for most of what goes on in the world, but it's the things that stand out from the 'general' standards tha make life interesting. If mediocrity COMPLETELY took over, living in this world would be a waste of time and space for everyone, rather than only for the mediocre majority that we now have.
