Is the Calypso III the best Spyderco yet?

I just got one and I am even more impressed than I thought I would be. I think back on all the different models I have owned and this one is one of the best. It is well made and well designed. It is not the best knife for every cutting task but it is one of the best and more usefull designs I have seen.

The one and only flaw I have found with it is that it is a little too small for some tasks. If the blade was 3/4"-1" longer, this would be one of the best EDCs I have ever seen. As it is, it is a neat little package that may retire many a knife from my EDC as well as many other people's I suspect.

I looked forward to this knife so much that I half expected to be dissapointed with it in some way. I am actually more impressed that I had hoped. This is a real winner that I hope sells a lot of knives for Spyderco.

I think a lot of folks would agree with you on that. I had a UKPK and as the handle design is the same as CalyIII I would disagree. Even my rather small hands are pretty much locked into a choil-only grip like the Native or Dragonfly. I prefer the Paramili's choil or no-choil grip depending upon cutting tasks.

hope this is what you want to see:thumbup:

Not in my opinion. The C83 Schempp Persian would be my choice for "best overall" and the Stretch for "best in-house" design.

For EDC I would vote the Caly 3 the best. My mini Manix is my fav for all around carry. I like S30V but the ZDP Caly 3 may change my mind.

Yes, best Spyderco ever made. And peerless at that -- nothing else combines the price point, performance, quality, and size. Man, how I love carrying and cutting with that thing!

Caly3 is awesome and the length of the blade is perfect for edc, given the laws in some states....(I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE DESIGN)

I can not tell about all Spydercos ever made, but among all, which I have or used to have Caly3 and Persian are on top place for EDC.

Sounds like I have to get a Caly 3! Best EDC, for me, is the Chinese Lum PE. I can't wait to see it in ZDP!

EDC since I got it. Nothing else has come close.

Not in my opinion. The C80 Dodo would be my choice for "best overall" design.:D

The Caly III is just such a neat package that it makes you want to use and carry it. The quality is there for sure. I am not saying that it is my favorite but I think it is one of if not the best knives Spyderco has put forth.

There are Spyderco knives that are higher quality (maybe) and knives from Spyderco that could be considered better designed but I can't think of a personal EDC sized knife from Spyderco that is as well made AND designed so well. It is everything from the materials to the fit and finish that make it feel so good. Like I said, I am even more impressed now that I have one than when I first saw one and wanted it badly. It is nice when you look forward to a knife and when you get it, it is everything you had hoped for. Doesn't happen all that often but it did with the Caly III and I am happy about it.

If it wasn't so expensive, this is the kind of knife you could give to just about anyone as gift and be proud to give it. At nearly $100, I can't give them to all my friends and family but I can give one or two away to those closest to me.

One more tiny flaw I have found is that it doesn't work all that well in reverse grip. I think a design like this is a natural to use as a paring knife and I mostly grip my paring knives in reverse grips to peel and slice. It work okay but it could be better. Nothing is perfect but the Caly III is hitting all the right notes with me so far. This is the kind of knife that will get used a LOT.

kgriggs8, I would certainly agree with all of your positive comments here as well as what the others have said. For me, the Caly 3 is pretty much perfect! If I could change one thing, it would be that the blade would have been S30V, but I like the VG10 very well also. Mine went straight in my pocket as soon as I received it. I do agree with Joe Talmadge and his comment. The Caly 3 is tops!!
I will add a couple pics also.

I will probably end up buying a Caly 3, it looks like a great cutting tool, but others are a little higher on my wish list (Manix, as I want a VHD folder as my next knife). I would love to see one with a 3.5" blade. For me my R2 is the perfect size for EDC, and I think the G-10 (my personal favorite handle material) and wire clip with a 3.5" full flat ground VG-10 blade would be a great EDC, maybe ideal for my medium duty EDC. In reality the blade size probably wouldn't make much real world difference, I just prefer a knife constructed that stout to be a little larger.
