Is the Calypso III the best Spyderco yet?

You guys are such good photographers that you even make that ugly knife look good.

Sal, there is nothing ugly about my Caly 3!! Of course, I think you really already know this.

Thanks, Ron

The Caly 3 has been in my pocket since I got it, but I think it's time we start seeing other people.
It's eminently practical, the ergonomics are great, fit & finish are excellent, and materials are top-notch. Lock-up is perfect with no blade play. I love the full flat grind. The deep wire clip is the best I've seen.
But... The pivot is too tight. I loosened it until the heads were off the scales, but still the blade was too tight for my taste. I like a blade I can flip closed against my finger, but I can't get the Caly3 to do that as easily as I like.
With steel liners and no washers, the blade around the pivot scratched quickly. This isn't such a big deal, but washers seems like the kind of little touch a $100 knife should have.

Don't get me wrong, I like it a lot, it's easily in my top 3. But it's not without flaws.

I think it's the best knife out there for being an actual pocket knife to use and carry. There is nothing better that I have used. That being said, there are a lot of other knifes that have features I want from time to time that it does not, so I will still buy and use plenty of other knives.

no no, Sal is right, the Caly III is Spyderco's ugliest knife ever :D ;) :p

ontopic: my dad think the Calypso's are the best (i traded him one for his JD SMith which he found too large, hahah, what a dumbass :) ..))

to me, the best Spyderco ever has to be the Military, no doubt about it

I actually think its one of spyderco's prettiest designs. It definitely looks better than the calypso jr.

I have to agree with you on this one. I've only been collecting for a short while but I really like the Caly 3. It is currently my EDC and has been since I received it. I would however like to see the swedge come back just from an apperance standpoint.

If you like the Caly 3 hold on to your hat. In Feb Spyderco is coming out with a Carbon ZDP Caly 3 . :D

Hi Steelco,

The "swedge" was removed because of complaints from the forumites about the swedge on the Calypso jr. function won over looks. The swedge was uncomfortable to press on with your thumb.

Just bought one today (along with a Manix and Delica 4). I can't say for sure that it's the best yet, but I definately like it.

But after carrying a mix of a Delica 1, Endura 1, and Benchmade AFCK for the past - I dunno - 10 years, I think I'd prefer the Caly 3 blade in the Delica 4 handle, especially if the Delica clip could be reworked into a lowrider or just replaced with the Caly 3 clip. I like something a little lighter and smoother for every day carry. The G10 is a little rough especially at first, making it a little hard to draw, but it should break in well. Still hate the rivets. Especially since the Delica 4 has Torx now. I just think G10 and Torx go together.

The blade just rocks though. Just playing around, my new Manix can out-cut the Caly 3 but none of my other current "tactical" folders or fixed blades can. The Caly 3 will definately get a lot of use from me.

Very nice picture Ron!! Nothing at all ugly about the Caly3. It's good to see you! I have been missing you AND your pictures!!
