Is the forum slow for anyone else on desktop?

I agree about the sales thread bumping. Even if you're not allowed to bump it yourself, it would be nice if when someone else replied to your thread it actually went back to the top (to show activity/interest in what youre selling).

Just a thought.

Disagree. And that doesn't make much sense considering it's the threads that have not received activety that benefit from first page exposure, not the ones that already have interest.

Think about it. It'd be pretty lame to get knocked off the front page when you haven't had any responses yet to a thread that was posted yesterday but there was a new post stating it sold.

I still stand by the hosting change, any host worth a damn would be all over this issue to fix it themselves.

Thanks for the update

Still very slow as a default and still getting this on a regular basis.

Been also getting a lot of these "Error 522 - Connection Timed Out" returns.

Does anyone know the reason for this?

Is it too much traffic and/or lack of bandwidth (or something else) and what's the plan to fix it?

If this is a true "community" as is proclaimed, I'm sure there is/are members with IT experience that would be happy to help assess the situation and help address root causes of these frustrating issues and recommend possible solutions for a more reliable, and user friendly experience, but that would be up to the site owner to post and solicit for that feedback?? community???? Instead the situation just invites criticism and complaints instead of constructive solutions.

It is not that cut and dried, unfortunately. There are vendors involved in running any web site; server vendors, hosting vendors, storage vendors, connection vendors, etc. If any one of them is experiencing an issue, you open a ticket with them to get an appropriate resource involved. You are at the mercy of the vendor to get the issue straightened out, and that vendor may need to pull in expertise from one of their vendors. You can escalate tickets to your heart's content, but you are still held back by a 3rd party somewhere. IT resources on the forum could probably say "Yes, we agree. That is the problem.", but still need the vendor to fix it. Could be flaky hardware in the chain or something that is badly configured. A technician can't access it remotely, so now they need to get someone on site to work on it. Service contracts are involved too, so you can't just drop vendor A and pick up with replacement vendor B. Even worse, it could be two vendors arguing over which one is the source of the issue. Nobody wins in those fights, and I can say that from personal experience.

Spark is probably ready to crack heads over this, but is doing the best he can. People don't like hearing complaint after complaint when they are powerless to affect a solution, and it just adds to their own frustration. :(

I am thankful that we have this forum to begin with.

Extremely slow, 522 errors often. Maybe it’s time to delete all the old posts and content older than 2-3 years? If it is relevant find a place for it (blade maintenance, steel info), but I don’t think sales posts need to be on the site for over a year?

I would disagree with that idea. Over 20 years of posting from Makers, Collectors and Enthusiasts is very relevant to the knife community. Also, research is what brings a lot of people to the site from search engines. Many of us have documented our work here for many years, losing that would be a travesty for all parties involved.

When I get the '522', I just click the back arrow to go back to the other page that I was on, then refresh the page, and then click to the place I was wanting to go. It's kind of a pita, but it's not that bad.

That is why I said to keep the relevant information. We don't need 5,000 pages of folding knife sales post with photos, for example. Keep the helpful information! 16K "hot babe" replies... absolute waste of space!

I understand your point though I think 99 percent of the forum is relevant in some form or another, especially the sales history. While knife models are dropped from online catalogs a lot of times the only way to find any information is through Bladeforums, especially those pesky folding knives you mention;)

I'm not sure that clearing post replies would clear up that much space and then it becomes an issue of having to nitpick through the entire forum to see what's useful and what's not. That opens up a whole other issue, who decides? I for one wouldn't want to be tasked with deleting other folks posts based on what I personally think is relevant. Even so, would deleting say 100,000 posts open up that much storage space? I can't answer that question but doubt it would.

I'm guessing that Media uploads play the biggest role but limiting those would be a bad idea in a time where forum formats are losing ground to mostly visual platforms. I think that would be shooting ourselves in the foot.

I don't understand the technical details but it sounds like storage space is what's needed, which comes at a cost. The only way to increase revenue here is through memberships and Ads. I'd rather see the number of memberships increase than the Ads even though I don't see any as a paying member.

There's no easy answer but I think erasing any Bladforums history would be a temporary solution with a negative long term result.

In conclusion....

I get this error every day too on desktop and mobile. I love the forum but it's painfully slow to load pages, posts, and likes on posts. It's not going to keep me from going on the forums but it does get frustrating. I'm sure in due time these issues will be resolved as well, fingers crossed!

It'd be cool to see an Instagram hyperlik in our profiles as well. I know a lot of forum members are on instagram as well and I'd love to be able to find their pages with a hyperlink in our profiles.

If more members purchase memberships I'm sure Spark will have all that he needs to keep this great community running smoothly for us all. This last update was aesthetically great

There is currently the option to add "Identities" on your profile, basically your username from other sources. Facebook, Twitter, Skype and a few others.

AIM, for some reason, is still an option even though it no longer exists.

Forum functionality is obviously the priority, but it doesn't hurt to start another thread in this forum (Tech Support) to gauge interest and see if it is something that Spark can add/change.

Slower than hell !!! Why can’t the owner at least acknowledge there is a problem and give us some suggestion about what is being done to fix it? Come on man!
