To me, "survivalism" is just being able to take care of yourself. "Survivalism" is staying out of a FEMA trailer and out of the Superdome or anything like the Superdome.
I concur. The scariest words I've ever heard: I'm with the government and I'm here to help.
People are amazing, I did some volunteer work for the Red Cross during the Katrina.
In a small town close to where I live they had one of the most horrible F-5 torandos ever seen and they still have tornados in the area, nothing has changed, but the lady that runs the Red Cross there said less than 5% of the people that live in that county are prepared for any kind of emergency, including tornados.
Now that is common sense, you know your area is at high risk for tornados yet you do nothing to prepare, NOT very smart but to each his own.
I think about this often because, barring total social and/or economic collapse, a tornado is the most likely event to rock my world.
I keep a decent amount of stuff on hand to overcome a variety of disastrous events such as extended power outages, snow storms and tornadoes. I have a supply of food, water treatment gear, firearms/ammo and most of the stuff that would facilitate short term survival. The thing is, they are all located in my home. If my home takes a direct hit from a tornado, I reckon that all of my gear will be destroyed and/or sucked up and relocated. So, in order to truly prepare for a tornado, I need to have a properly stocked residence, or storage facility, in a remote location. Unfortunately, my income is insufficient for this type of preparedness.
