Is there a difference between "survival" and "survivalist" training?

I personally prefer silver to Gold in most cases as the smaller denominations may be easier to exchange from time to time. It does take up more room, so a mix of Gold and silver may have it's advantages. The bottom line is....we don't know what the future holds.....we all have to prepare the best way we see fit.

Lots of very good advice here in this thread.

As to some big conspiracy of the media to spread disinformation to the general public. I do (after spending a few years in socialist indoctrination training, aka as college) think that the mass media is biased in a very far "left" direction (for the most part). I have seen first hand the disinformation that is spewed out of the media (remember I am in the liberal hot bed from hell, MA).

Case in point.....I was a first responder to an over turned motor vehicle on the highway, the only "victim" in the MV was a nice gentleman who was drunk and singing out loud, happy as hell, and with an open compound FX of his femur (and he was feeling no pain). Anyway, you get the idea of the scene, over turned car, drunk guy still(you could smell the booze from 3 feet away) in there, no real help in the area. I pulled open the passenger side door to the car, let me say that again I pulled the door open with my two hands and fat ass the passanger side door, so I could get access to the guy. Once inside the car I had a man come over to help who was also an of duty EMTP (at the time I was an EMTB), we both kept him stable and removed him from the car (even after the full response of the local fire rescue and EMS, we were already in the MV and in control of the scene). So after I and my new found partner got him c-spined, boarded, and packaged for transport. We then had to bring the state PD up to speed on what we found when we got there.

The news the next day reported on the accident. The story had all of the delusional fluff and disinformation I have come to hate about the main stream media (at least here in the peoples republik), and how the Husrt tool (aka Jaws of Life)had to be used to cut the victim from his burning car and that the man had to be revived by the Paramedic's!!!!! WHAT??? The only thing the responding fire and EMS did was pull the battery cables off and hand me and the other off duty EMTP equip.!!! Wow, I never knew my 200 pound ass, looked just like a Hurst tool (for those that don't know it has a gas generator, about 50 ft of cabling and the tool that has to be set up to be used). Nice spin on the facts eh????

I was a little pissed to see the flat out lie on what happened that day, not that I was looking to get in the paper (I would rather not be in any way, but at least the picture had my bent over ass in the shot, lol). Being in college at the time I set out to find out why the flat out fiction was printed about the incident. I contacted the paper looking to talk to the reporter and was given the run around for two weeks(hmmm I wonder why??). I finally got in touch with the editor (I had to lie to get to him), after talking with him he told me the entire story was based on facts from the State Police Report, I challenged that(told him flat out he was full of shit!!), and handed him a copy of the SP reports, EMS reports and Fire Dept reports for the incident and asked him to show me where "the facts" came from. He turned white and left with out so much as another word to me. He knew he just got caught in a huge lie. So much for integrity and honesty in reporting.

I never did find out if it was the reporter or the editor that made up the story(it was not really worth it to pursue it). I do know that the reporter still had his job at least a year later.

I have over a dozen similar incidents that I was a direct witness to that was not even close when it was reported in the media. If you really think the the mass media is honest, then so be it, I know I look at the media in a very different light, and for good reason.

I do know one thing, shocking and sensational headlines sell papers and advertising slots. Does that contribute to the spin on reporting?? Is it just a monetary issue?? Is there pressure from other sources to report things "our way" or "our view"?? Is the lack of honest reporting an issue with the view point of the editors and upper management?? Can you turn a flat out lie in to truth by reporting it to hundreds, thousands or millions of mindless sheeple??

Anyway, sorry for the long story, it was the only way I could think to make my point.

I'll get off my soapbox:rolleyes:;)

One thing is certain. Gold is always good as gold. It will always have some value. Not so, paper.

Answer: Yes. It's called Fox News.

Buy ammo. .357. It's evidently worth more than gold cause I might as well be panning for it with my success rate at finding any around here...

The top trade items for the "Pocyclypse" As Mad Max would put it, would most likely be:
Toilet paper
Booze
Smokes
Ammo
Tampons
Chocolate
Antibiotics
Pain Killers
Water filters

The order of importance depending on which the person has the least of.

Great post, Joe, and exactly what we try to preach here on the forums. The guy that survives is not necessarily the guy that knows how to build the best trap, it will probably be the guy that knows a little bit about everything. We encourage people to branch out and experience as much as possible, and that means using / buying other knives besides RAT, going to different training that may do it different than we do, engaging people in friendly debates to learn more, demanding the truth from someone you're dealing with, improvising simple things, improving complicated things, learning to speak a new language, learning first aid (or advanced) life saving skills even if it's not in a formal setting, knowing how to use a wide array of weaponry....and on and on. Specialization is for insects (to steal a line)

Amen

It morphed into the Snowmageddon or Snowpocalypse as some people were calling it here. People were purchasing $10.00 or $15.00 cheapass snow shovels from China-Mart, Home Despot and Lowe's and selling them out in the parking lot for three to four times that amount after they bought them all and people found out the stores were sold out. The love people have for their fellow man is so touching, it just tears me up inside sometimes. :)

Speaking of snowmaggedon, best thing to do is get loaded, grab a jeep and go pull people out for free and piss off oppurtunistic tow truck drivers.

It could happen, but if I have food and I need something you have, then gold is not going to be worth a shit as a barter tool. You can't eat, shoot, drink or screw gold. This whole gold as a survival tool BS started back in the 70s. Gold, to me, is only good if the economy doesn't collapse.

I agree, I think if the economy actually does collapse and our infrastructure completely fails then salt will likely be worth much more than gold to a lot of people. As will canning jars, pressure cookers, cloth, seal able containers, sugar, ammo, firearms, and knives...and whiskey. Along with several other things.

sorry if you find this completely off topic
but i couldnt help but think of this cartoon while reading....

An awesome idea.

Actually, when I get this current vehicle paid off, I want to save up and get a Jeep Wrangler. I have been going round and round for months on an old work van, 25+ years old, and a plain-Jane Jeep.

Whiskey will most definetly command a high trade value in a post SHTF world.

I think the problem is some preppers live their lives constantly afraid of a SHTF situation while others prepare to embrace the challenge while living their day to day lives.

+1 for the barter system
I figure sebenzas will go for a few goats or something after the bomb drops/economy implodes/zombies rise etc.

Growing up in the cold war, I started my life out prepping for the S hitting the F.

I came to post something along exactly these lines. If you have $100,000 in gold coins and are starving to death, you'll give every last ounce to me for an MRE. ANY form of money is directly related to the system that supports it. Once that system collapses, the need and use of that money collapses with it. Gold has no intrinsic value, it only means something to us because it's relatively rare. For example, in ancient times people used shells as money. How much food and ammo do you think you could get for that conch sitting on a shelf today?

If you want to stock up on something that will have value after the SHTF, I suggest stocking up on tools, car parts, and building supplies. Stock up on things with real intrinsic value, things that can be USED for something.

The only thing I can see gold being good for is there are always people who want to look good and have trinkets, so the guy you are bartering with may not want a gold coin but to keep his wife happy she may want a simple gold band or necklace. But I do wholeheartedly agree with you guys, just saying everybody wants something.IMO

Wasn't it Orwell that brought up controlling the future through controlling the past? Do those particular lies at some point in the future become statistics in a google searches... or do they just remain lies and fade into the past? We know they help form impressions upon their initial delivery.

I agree with you man, currency does not mean much when it gets down to subsistence living at it's primal best.
All forms of preservation will be critical.
Having all the equip prepped in a bin for a small still would be priceless. Harvest fruit etc, ferment and trade.
You would definitely have to be armed and prepared if your trading booze however, like a big rob me sign.

In Iraq we would stop vehicles with trash bags full of cash and they didn't seem to care when we took them out for searches and a couple guys asked if they could have a coulpe bills for keepsakes, the people would just give them a handful. It wasn't worth squat.
