Is This Hunting?

I've never used or owned a tree stand. To be clear I only kill animals that I can stalk on foot. Everyone has their own ethics agreed. I just stalk my prey on foot and then shoot it with a shotgun. Or wait for it to come to me. Except when bird hunting then I use a blind for ducks. never used a rifle or bow. If I can's stalk it into shotgun range I don't kill it. To each his own. I don't think shooting deer in a baited area is hunting. It's kinda lame IMO

That's cool, just don't knock people that do, it is really none of your business.

Hunt your way, I will hunt mine and others will decide what as right for them, as long as it is within the law it is none of any of our business. Chris

runningboar,
I was responding to the person who started this post. Drew. he asked for our opinion on just that, hunting on plotted land and if we thought it was really hunting. I responded with my opinion. Is it my business? No. it's my opinion.

c'mon guys lol we got enough problems with the anti's lets not turn on each other. Everyones got diff views of hunting some just a lil stricter and tighter than others. To each his own as long as its legal is what I feel. Some things may not be as sporting as others but thats all perspective. just enjoy your hunting is what I say, a day might come when not everyone can afford it or do it.

i really don't care how anyone else hunts. I was just answering the question set forth by drew. but saying someone shouldn't be able to drive a suped up car unless they did it themselves its somewhat comical.:D

Hey Guys..

I agree,, lets not turn this into a slug fest...

For the people who have the time to go out and play hide and seek with deer,, thats Awesome.. More power to you...

However I'm limited on time. Spot and stalk with a bow of any kind is a Very difficult thing to do.

I could have had six tags this year for deer,, I only opted for two...
I wanna get in quick,, set up on some run ways,, food plots, funnels or what have you, zap a deer in the engine room and get out.

When I'm hunting like this, quick and dirty, I'll hunt from the ground, (unless I drag in a stand a few days before), I'm usually using Complete scent elimination ,including a shower, scent killer spray,Scent Lok suit and a Ghillie suit over top of that..

Other than visually and thats pretty much covered with the Ghillie suit,, I should be next to invisable to them.

I had 4 deer go past me last year within 5 feet of me sitting on the ground. If I had been sitting where they ran through they would have trampled me..They were so close I could hear them breathing.

They stopped 15 yards behind me in tall grass, I couldn't see the vitals, so I didn't take the shot.... I guess I could have easy stood up and took the shot, but there were already in alert mode from something that spooked them out of the other field.

Doing things more traditional like is cool if you've got the time, however it's something I don't have alot of..

I'm there to kill deer, for food, and population control.
Where we hunt here at home and in our deer woods 3 hours away we are over run with deer, 3-6 tags can easily be filled in a matter of a month...

When theres that many deer,, you are also hunting to cull the herd, you take them however possible legally possible,, take what you came for and go home...

I start in earnest on Wed afternoon.. I know Exactly where I'm going to sit.. About 25 yards from where I see a herd of does gathering each and every night...

Thursday moring I start working on Tree Rats with my .22 air rifle...
Squirrel stew on for Friday night dinner....

Eric, sweet. sounds like you put in your time though. I wouldn't discredit your hunting style. anytime they are on top of you you have done your homework. rat stew with a boiler shot the next day? sounds pretty fun to me:thumbup: BTW im not trying to start anything, or argue with anyone. like i said i i don't care how others hunt, just trying to answer the original question. Sorry if I came off abruptly runningboar. No hard feelings towards anyone. Enjoy your hunting style and be safe.

First Rifle (light wood) is a Feinwerkbau 600 ex officio Olympic 10 meter gun I rescued and rebuilt into a tack driver in 4.5 mm. At around 450-500 fps it doesn't have enough power to kill,, so it's duty is punching paper and matchheads at 25 yards. Sporting a BKL one piece cantalever base and Riser, with a Hawk Air 6X20X50mm AO Mildot scope.

The second rifle is my RWS Diana model 350 Magnum in 5.5mm at 950 fps Sporting a Hawk Air one piece base and a Hawk Air 6X18X44mm AO mildot scope.

Both Awesome rifles that have their purpose in life....

The Diana model 350 is my primary hunting air rifle...

That is excactly the way I meant it to be. It is almost as comical as someone saying you aren't a deer hunter if you hunt over food plots.;)

Sevenedges, I am not fighting with you I just get tired of hearing that because your way is different or harder, my way is unethical. Very few of the people that cry foul have ever hunted with dogs, or over bait or any other of the "bad ways" and really don't know what they are talking about.

We live in a wonderful time where most places there is plenty of game for everyone. We should be in the woods, not fussing over whether hunting with a bow is the only true way or maybe it is shooting a high power from a quarter mile away, who cares, hunt, enjoy nature, and use what you kill.

I agree with the above posts, We should all be together on this one. Spending time in the woods is what it is all about. I'm open to new ideas anyway. There isn't any legal way to hunt that I wouldn't be willing to try. Actually, if it's not legal it's not called hunting it's poaching anyway. Whant matters is everyone has a safe fun hunting season. And watch out for those out there who are inexperienced and/or unsafe. And why is it that I can call in a dozen turkeys in five minutes until the first day of the season?:D

After reading this thread for a while, I've come back to the conclusion that if you kill an animal with as little suffering as possible, and eat it, it's ethical.

Where I live they have an "Earn-a-Buck" program in some areas. You have to register a doe before you're allowed to tag a buck. The deer population needs to be managed. I'd rather see an out-of-state touristy hunter kill a deer at a salt-lick and take the meat home, than see the same deer get hit by a car or succumb to hunger.

Everyone here needs to read the book "How to bag the biggest buck of your life" by Larry Benoit. He hunts along with his sons in the mountains and hills of Maine and Vermont by the method of tracking. He and his sons sometimes travel 10 miles or more up and down hills tracking a buck whose track they crossed. The vast majority of todays hunters just can't do that because of landowner/boundary issues. You don't go and trespass because you feel like it. (Well actually you can if you want to be a JERK-OFF) It has lasting negative impact on the future of the pastime. That leaves the rest of us to harvest game the modern way and that usually means sitting in a stand or blind and waiting till an opportunity arises. Sad but true.

Gibby, you're right. However the majority of the U.S. population lives within ten miles of the coast. I think I should move to the middle of nowhere, so I can roam like that. It would be awesome. That is my dream. Find a nice wife, and move into the widerness. I need to make it happen. until then I will be stuck as you speak of. Where I hunt I can track game, but not for ten miles without running into another dirt road.
