Is Wranglerstar on Youtube a reliable source of information about axes etc.?

Wranglerstar...........Gentlemen, please excuse me while I go outside & VOMIT!

It's just the thought of him, it gives that involuntary stomach spasm!

He is a reliable source for information. If you know so much more than he does why don't you have over 340,000 subscribers and get paid to YouTube? Also for the FYI a planer doesn't have to be a heavy power tool. Your just jealous that he gets to do what he likes to do all day and you have to do a job that you do not like.

He is a reliable source for information. . .
True, you can count on him for information in every video. "Reliable" information - not so much.

. . . If you know so much more than he does why don't you have over 340,000 subscribers and get paid to YouTube?. . .
Illogical argument (i.e. lots of videos = knows a lot is clearly FALSE)
I don't understand why people use the argument "let's see your youtube channel where you do a better job..." I'm not sure what kind of fallacy that is...argument from silence? Ad hominem? Anyway, it really has nothing to do with the debate presented.
Some of wranglerstars stuff is entertaining, which should be viewed as the primary purpose of the channel. As with any other source of info, use it at your own risk. Some of the things he has said about axes have been demonstrably false. On two occasions I have wasted my time pointing out misinformation in the comments sections of his videos. I don't remember one, but I remember the other was something completely false he said about the temper of axes. I pointed out that it was incorrect and viewers may end up ruining temper due to the bad advice. Both times he deleted my comments with no response or anything. So, that's lame if nothing else.

. . . Also for the FYI a planer doesn't have to be a heavy power tool. . .
Who is "the FYI" (Also for the For Your Information ...)? Where in this thread did the topic of Wranglerstar, planers, and heavy power tools come from?

Are you a mind reader?

This is a serious question; Why does he elicit so much passion in peoples opinion? (HogWylder forgive me for singling you out, you're not the only one that has expressed this).
IMO we all started out with zero knowledge and have progressed at various rates to whatever level of expertise we have. Inarguably some more than others, but even if his techniques are imperfect, I'm sure what he does know he either learned from his grandfather or through experience. Everyone's knowledge is on a continuum. For me, at least he's living his dream, and most importantly he seems sincere, humble and acknowledges his shortcomings.

There may be some aspect of his life or character that I don't know about and is reproachable, but then again there are aspects to my life and character that others may find reproachable.

At the end of the day, his videos entertain me, educate me (I have a brain and can descriminate between what has value or not.), relax me and motivate me. So seriously what's the beef?

He is a reliable source for information.

This is demonstrably false.

If you know so much more than he does why don't you have over 340,000 subscribers and get paid to YouTube?

Because he's an entertainer, and is good at creating content that generates views and subscribers; that is to say, he is very good at entertaining. There is a world of difference between entertainment and education, and while the two are not mutually exclusive, neither are they mutually inclusive. Bear Grylls, as a notable example, arguably knows a lot about wilderness survival but the things he does on TV are entertainment rather than education, and mimicking his televised exploits is a good way to get yourself killed.

Also for the FYI a planer doesn't have to be a heavy power tool. Your just jealous that he gets to do what he likes to do all day and you have to do a job that you do not like.

Huh? Maybe I missed it, but where was anyone talking about planers? Also, I do get to do what I like all day and am personally not jealous at all. Merely frustrated by the way so many blindly take his word as gospel when much of it is tenuous at best. He doesn't get it wrong all the time, but sure does often.

It makes one wonder why he then used this phrase to describe the video: "A proper brush axe is hard to find. Today I'll put the Kelly Works brush axe to the ultimate test." Perhaps putting it to the test, yes, but the ultimate test? The very springy brush that he states it is ineffective on is the very sort of growth it's actually intended for. While it's good that he acknowledges his own limited knowledge of the tool, it's a perfect example of him demonstrating that ignorance. This is what I like to call the danger of a little knowledge. He knows just enough about the subjects he covers in order to project the persona of an expert to those who are rote beginners, when he is a novice himself.

This best sums up his work. He has always tried to make himself out as the expert that he very clearly isn't.

For me, at least he's living his dream, and most importantly he seems sincere, humble ...........

The antithesis of humble.

If he sticks with it he may well develop great knowledge and skill in time. But he ain't got it yet.

Agree, we all started at zero and continue to learn, but IMO it seems to me that with all his "proper" this and that, he invites criticism.

. . .(I have a brain and can descriminate between what has value or not.). . .
And hopefully what is safe and what is not. All fine for adults, but what about teenage boys?

Bob

BTW it's "discriminate".

There is a good amount of introductory knowledge, and some pretty great videos. But he makes his money off of making these videos and it is quite clear this is a big reason for his lack of humility, often to the point of talking down to anyone questioning him. As a videographer we see that he spends a lot of time switching between tasks and not even trying to master any of them.

Recently a lot of his videos have been clickbait. For example, one was recently entitled "Living in a Log Home: Pros and Cons" and the video was not at all about this, simply some complaining about inconsistencies and having to uncover/cover up windows and doors in a log house they bought. A more recent one was called "Axe Tricks of the US Forestr Service" and it was simply a look at a Forest Service tool gauge. Information which is good to know for beginners, but not at all what the title suggested.

I've tried to be fair to him in most discussions, but the clickbaiting has me wanting to just never watch again.

I like his videos, because he can show people how to do something and leave them with reasonable expectations .
I don't agree with everything he says nor do I think he's an expert, but I his videos are entertaining and he does know quite a bit .
And he helps get people interested in axes.
I also like the fact that he doesn't want to get into reality TV.
( for me Jimmy diresta is the only one that I don't mind being in reality TV, because how can a guy just making stuff get messed up )

You have to take it as an example of not how not to do things. That guy is in it for the revenue his vids generate. The more you watch the more money he makes.

I would imagine he's developed thick enough skin by now to encourage controversy such as on here. As someone previously mentioned, the more hits his videos get the more sponsorship etc there is. Who wouldn't want to be at home playing all day and bankrolled at the same time? Maybe his next foray into expertise will have a hunting/fishing slant to it. Way more interest and therefore way more money!

Doesn't he stay away from sponsorship to avoid selling out ?
