Okay, thinking about having a day gathering at Peche Island on the Detroit River. Its a nice island park. Unfortunately the park does not allow camping, so the gathering will be a day time activity. The island is a mucipal park. I can shuttle folks from Windsor, ONT to the Island in one of our boats parked nearby. Just get yourslef to Windsor on the day and time and I'll get you over to the Island.

Could be a lot of fun. The trails aren't all that bad. There are firepits available for use and BBQ areas. Plus, because its an island it remains pretty uncrowded.
I'm looking at Sat. May 2. I can accomodate a few folks at my house the night before for those who want to travel. I.e. Toronto folks (Mentor and Doc-Canada). Who would be interested?

If I get at least 5 folks then we are on!

Well, I'm definitely interested. This is a great idea!

I'm going to have to double-check my schedule and consider the logistics, but as of right now, I'm keen.

All the best,

- Mike

I may be at my cousins graduation in the Soo, but if I'm mistaken about the date then I would be interested, just not quite sure how I would get there. I could swim there from the end of my block, but coming back against the current wouldn't be much fun (and it would make bringing gear to play with a little difficult, not to mention the lake would still be pretty COLD). Same can be said for trying to get down there on a canoe or kayak. If my buddy has his boat in by then he would probably be down to go in which case I could make it. Anyway once I figure out if thats the weekend my cousin graduates I'll be back in touch.

Hey k, sounds like a good idea, but it's too early to know, for me. My normal work week is Tuesday to Saturday, so, in part, it would depend on how busy we are at that time.

cmdionne - if you don't have a vehicle just take the tunnel bus to Windsor, I can pick you up from there. Hope you can make it.

Called my cousin and his graduation is on May 2nd. So unless I end up having to stay in town to work, I won't be able to make it. Too bad, but if all goes well we could probably do another gathering later in the summer. If we choose some time when my buddy is around we could ferry people from Detroit over on his sailboat.

Just bumping this thread and adding some additional pictures. Peche Island is a municipal park that is part of the City of Windsor. Unfortunately they do not allow camping on the Island, however, there are several sanctioned fire pits scattered about and you can have a fire in the designated fire rings. There are also some BBQ stands in the general area. As an island park with bridge access, the area is relatively pristine. Overall, it is a good couple of half day to walk the entire Island. Mature forests and some old ruins in the Island – Hiram Walker’s old homestead, can be found.
Here is a satellite view of the island proper:

Is this island Canadian or US land? I don't have one of those new ID cards yet. So if it's not US I will need to look into that....I am interested.

It's Canada, but the new passport rules don't kick in until June, so a birth cert is still acceptable identification. If you're going to be going over on your own boat to Peche Island you need to fill out a form from DHS, they might have them online. I think you are also required to call Canadian Customs once you land on Canadian soil.

Cmdionne gave all the appropriate information. The Island is Canadian. If you are getting a boat ride from me than I will give out a Canadian marina address to meet up on the morning of the gathering. You will have to drive over the Ambassador Bridge or take the tunnel and after which pass through customs. A birth certificate + photo id is valid. They prefer a passport if you have one, that is the best I.D. to use when crossing the border.

I will provide full instructions on how to get there. A few people on the Detroit side mentioned that they may take their boat. I can't comment on the legality of landing on CDN soil regarding customs etc. However, the Island is commonly used by American boaters and I see them docked there frequently. Just be aware that there is a no wake zone all around the Island and while driving you boat in CDN waters you are required to have on board the appropriate safety equipment as per CDN regulations.

I'll post more info, maps and itinerary as we get closer to the date. So far, it looks like we have enough interest to make it a definite go day! I'm really looking forward to this guys!

This looks pretty good to me, Ken....... I'll try and get Eric, Jimmy and Wally, if you want?

Definitely bring 'em rick. We got enough interested folks that it looks like this is On!!!!!

With the allstar lineup, I may just have to find a way out of going to my cousins graduation. If I can't hopefully we might be able to put together another gathering like this for later in the summer?

I only wish Belle Isle was anywhere as nice of a place to be as Peche Island.

I actually may be able to make it now. Depending on my friend being back/his boat being in the water/being able to figure out all of the paperwork I would have to file I might be heading over with a friend on his boat, or if that all doesn't pan out I might just drive over and meet you at the marina.

I'll know more closer to the time.
