Island Gathering - Michigan/Windsor (May 2)???

I don't think a spyderco is a problem as that kind of blade style is pretty well recognized. As long as it isn't on your person when you are going through customs, i.e. it is in a bag or back pack or luggage and second it isn't in some strange place in your vehicle where it could be construed as a weapon - like under the seat or in the glove box or something like that. Otherwise should be okay.

We're making it sound like a big deal but it really isn't that bad crossing the border...

Just don't look em in the eye.

Just bumping this as I will not be here tomorrow or Sat. - off enjoying the wilderness. This is now two weekends away!!

Next weekend I will post details - location for boat pick up and times. I will shuttle folks back and forth during the morning over a couple of hours just so as to be flexible - and will even bring a cell phone with me for the stragglers.

Here is some additional info.

American Drivers You will cross the border at Detroit and can use either the Ambassador Bridge or the Tunnel. The Tunnel is closer to the marina by a couple of km but it dumps you into the downtown area that is slightly trickier to get yourself back onto Riverside drive. Basically, find your way back to the road immediately adjacent to the Detroit River (Riverside Drive), turn right while facing the river and from there proceed right to the marina (about 5.5 miles from Tunnel and 7 miles from the bridge).

The marina is called Lakeview Marina and it is at the junction of Riverside Dr. and Riverdale Ave. There are two marinas next to one another. Lakeview marina is the one just past the Mac's Milk Convenience store and there is a left turning lane at a streetlight. The most notable feature of the marina is a big white and red lighthouse by the road. There is also a small gate at the entrance. If an attendee is there they will not charge you to enter unless you are launching a boat.

Meeting Time

Saturday, May 2 (next weekend). I will be at my boat at the Marina and begin shuttling people to and from the marina/Island between 9:30 am and 11:30 am. After that I plan to enjoy some of the Island myself. I will provide my cell phone # to folks who pm me in case they miss me, need directions or need to be brought to the Island.

Boaters

On the attached Peche Island Map next to the meeting area (the embayment with the 0.9 m sounding) there are spots to doc your boat. The landing area is on the CDN side facing the marina.

Agenda

The morning and early afternoon is your time to explore. I don't have any planned activities other than for you guys to enjoy the trails and scenery. There are several firepits along the trails that you can use. Please restrict fires to the designated fire areas. You may fish from the Island but remember that you are in Canadian waters and require an Ontario sport fishing license to do so. Alcohol is not permitted on the Island. Be discrete if you choose to bring some. I.e. don't carry around and drink directly out of a bottle, pour your material in cup or SS water bottle.

We will plan to meet up at the main Landing area at about 3:30 pm.

There is a large covered picknick area with BBQ stands and a nice sized fire pit. I will bring some wood to have a fire and some briquettes to BBQ. Bring yourself some hamburgers, sausages or dogs to BBQ. We can also take this opportunity to compare and play with gear. I'll bring a couple of pre-made hearths and bow drills to try your hand at fire.

Unfortunately the Island has a curfew at that means we will have to vacate by 10:00 pm. If you need any additional information just pm me or send my a private e-mail.

(Note there is a Beer Store - called 'The Beer Store' on college street if you are taking this route, the beer store is on College and Campbell. If you want to find a liquor store, pm me and I'll give you directions. There is one not too far off).

Oh yeah parking. Normally you can park free of charge directly in the marina. Try to be mindful of taking up the trailer spots or use two cars per trailer spot if you arrive with another vehicle. Otherwise there is a parking lot on the opposite side of Riverside Drive just down Riverdale Ave.

Hope to see a bunch of folks next Sat. Morning! (May 2)

Looks like I'm not going to be able to make this one  People got confused about their schedule at work and it seems I'm going to have to work on Saturday. Hopefully this goes well and maybe if there's another one I could make it.

Have fun, sad that I can't join you. What kills me is that I will be just a short swim away on the Eastern end of Belle Isle while you all are enjoying yourselves. I get off work at six, but by the time I got home to let my dog out and then headed back downtown to cross over it would be pretty late.

That is too bad to hear cmdionne. Can we start a list of prospective people. So far I've heard from Rick and Brian Andrews and a few folks who were interested but subsequently ran into schedule conflicts.

Who else looks like they will be able to make it?

Good news is the long term forcast is actually predicting a nice day with a nearly perfect 17oC (63 oF) temperature for playing in the bush!

Which Marina are you launching from? Is it the one on Riverside that the Crosstown 2 goes by?

It looks like me and my wife would be available to go.
At least this time it would be in a boat rather than some kind of tube!:D

Thats good to know!. It will be at Lakeview marina. I'm not sure which bus takes you there. It is off Riverside Drive and past Lauzon as indicated by the posted maps. See you Sat.

Awesome Jimi! Dang - I'm going to be surrounded by the finest knifemakers around!

I met with Eric the other night. He won't be going. His dad is not doing well and he can't be away.

I won't have much to bring, knifewise.... I'm killing myself here just trying to keep up. I'll bring a couple prototypes and test knives to beat on, of course.

I'll be at your place in the am, KGD!!! .... one cream, one sugar.
