It’s All Come Down To This

I’m interested in knowing if any of you have ever downsized to just one particular knife. Or if you ever just stuck with one and never gotten another. If so to either of those, why is that?

In my quest to find “one” I’ve found that this website has made my failed attempts increasing in number. Resistance is futile!

I can relate with firearms. Some days you want a smaller carry option. I drop kids off at school late and a sub 3inch is all that’s allowed. Some days I go all out and carry two knives. A real beefy user and another smaller sliver.

As far as firearms I’ve consolidated to g19 and g26ish. I’m honestly trying to find a “big” and “smaller” option that works for me. Likely I’ll downsize to 3. But as I said I’ve just been adding more and more to the collection! Lol

Not possible. I rotate based on day of the week (today was Manix Monday) and what clothes (color) I'm wearing. Even carry guns I rotate between my Steyr M9-A1 and Sig P365SAS.

One knife limits what you are able to do. There has never been a knife that will do everything and certainly not well. It’s either going to be to big or to small. I learned a long time ago and I almost always have at least two knives on me and others in my vehicle.

Your entire concept is blasphemous and the very antithesis of righteousness . ;)

I usually carry 2 large knives and one small one on my keychain .

Plus, I sometimes like to rotate my carry with others in my collection .

I don't see any fun or advantage to the whole "just one " notion .

Seriously it's like going to golden corral and being told to pick one thing to eat and nothing else.

Could I get by with only one? Probably. Is their one knife to rule them all? Certainly not. The most well rounded knife I own is my customized Manix 2. But it's uncomfortably heavy while wearing hybrid or linen shorts. So I look to my Twist Tighe OTF, Civivi McKenna, or other smaller lightweight knife. On average, they can handle most things I might run into at a desk job. I keep a Vic Super Tinker in my bag always.

When I go to my sister's house, it's my Heretic Manticore E. Medium weight and size, pretty robust blade, and with four little ones around, it's too hard for them to open, and if dropped it won't accidentally open.

If I'm helping someone move, or something similar, I carry my Gayle Bradley. Its well used, tough, can handle just about anything. And if I let someone use it for a moment, I'm not too worried it will break.

I think it's stupid to limit oneself in such away.

I'm a special case, but fidget factor is big to me. I have severe anxiety and flicking/flipping open and closed helps me calm down instead of medicine. Yes I'm constantly adjusting the pivot on my knives because they off center, but it's great relief.

I could never downsize to just one knife. I am in the process of culling my accumulation as age and a fixed income force me to. So, my children, grandchildren and some of their friends have been given quite a few over the year or so. Two I will never part with is my Pioneer X and my Case medium Stockman (6318) American Workman.

I've considered it, but it'll never happen. Reason being is my carry knives each have their own purpose. When working in the field I carry a Leatherman, but that same Leatherman is impractical in the office, so then I carry a SAK, but that SAK is slow to deploy when I'm at home and need to cut something quickly and conveniently, so I carry a one hand opener at home, on the weekends and in street clothes. When I go fishing I have my fixed blade bait knife, because cleaning bait out of folders is a chore. When having a few beers with my mates while cooking meat on the fire, I have a cheaper folder like an Okapi, because at some point one of my inebriated mates will borrow it and cut their steak on the metal grid with it, or some other stupid alcohol influenced decision. It's just not possible for me to have one knife for life. It's like owning just one pair of shoes. I'm not wearing flip flops to the office and I'm not going on a hike with my dress shoes

In the beginning I was not a knife person and all I had was a 91mm SAK. Then I bought a basic Marttiinii puukko, used that for a few years, then wanted a folder and bought a Buck/Mayo TNT and a Swisstool X right when it was released. This was enough for the next ten years, but then I bought a Bravo 1, followed by a Fallkniven WM1 and a Mora Bushcraft Triflex. Things accelerated from there.

Now it is hard to imagine not having twenty of my favorite folders, and about a dozen of my nicest full tang knives around at all times. But I slowed way down with buying new stuff and that is already a success. I just want to enjoy what I have and do a few mods now and then.

A number of years ago I was forced to sell off my collection and with the exception of some SAK's I only kept this small Sebenza. Thankfully since then I've been able to slowly build my collection up again and, have even been able to buy back some of the exact knives I've sold.

So while downsizing to one is possible, I would not do it willingly. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life.

I have kinda done that. In that I have one knife on my keychain, the same one for several years now. A JE made mini Zulu. I also carry the same larger knife every day for months now, a Viper Sowbelly in stag. It's a traditional knife done in modern materials. Titanium bolsters and M390 blade steel.

I used to chase the 'ONE' and ended up with a drawer full of knives that never got used, even some Chris Reeve Sebenzas of different flavors. I re-evaluated, realized my life wasn't particularly better because I saved a few seconds every time I used my knife, and sold off most of my collection that was worth selling. I have always been drawn to the classic knives, and they finally make classic patterns in completely modern steels, so I don't give up the edge retention I've grown accustomed to. A good slipjoint isn't dangerous if you use it correctly. I haven't felt compelled to buy another knife and don't see myself doing so anytime soon.

That said, I still visit the forums regularly, look at new knives, and undoubtedly eventually a new one will find it's way into my mailbox. There is much satisfaction to be had from decluttering your life and downsizing. I'm not a minimalist, but I have left the path of becoming a hoarder. I also have a good fixed blade, a Bradford guardian 3.5 that has handled everything I've ever needed a fixed blade for save food prep, and there's a good set of kitchen knives for that.

While no knife excels for every use, I have found my personal best for the few categories I deem necessary.

Best Keychain knife: JE made mini Zulu.
Best pocketknife: Viper Sowbelly in Stag
Best fixed blade: Bradford guardian 3.5 in M390
Best chef's Knife: Global chef's knife.

I would imagine hunters or others that camped regularly might have a more extensive list of useful knives.

My mother told me to change my pocket knife and underwear every day. I do what my mother says.

I could, in theory, downsize to 1 pocket knife (S30V Endura), 1 multi-tool (LM Wave+), 1 SAK (Explorer), and 1 fixed blade (BR Bravo 1.25). Is that close enough?
