I've been on the hunt for a leather sheath for a small Boy scouts axe and I can tell you $5.00 for that nice sheath is a great deal never mind getting the axe as well!

That is excellent. While no museum piece, that is perfectly good for hobbyists and part time tinkerers like us. I'm betting that you got a good deal on it. Based on the horn wear and the general good shape of the face, I'd bet a good amount that it was used by a farrier.

BTW, Kohlswa anvils are solid cast steel, no face welded on. These are all one solid piece. Imported from about 1925 to about 1960, later ones tended to have slightly softer faces. I don't know when yours was made, but even if a later one, you are not making a living on it. Nice find.

Dont take this as an insult of anything of that sort, but i am curious to know where you got that information from to say that all kohlswa anvil are solid cast steel, id like to read more of that brand as i had no luck finding much information on it. then again, i am not a sourcing expert like some of you guys are :)

Thanks in advance, Remzy

Maybe he read it here:

Blacksmith anvils
Kohlswa cast steel anvils are designed for both professionals and amateur enthusiasts, and are available in a range of designs. The material used is a type of cast steel designed especially for the purpose.
Flame hardening is used to provide the anvil face with a hardness of approximately 55 HRC.

Got this feller today for $10. Any ideas ? Looks to be a "H" in a shield stamp ?(Charles E Hall Co ?)
NPRY ? Googled a bit and Northern Pacific rail road comes up. I'll add a pic of another adze I found online that shows a similar stamp?

Nice ! That would be cool as hell. Any ideas on dating this thing ? I did see a thread about adze's here and one about them being used to cut spikes ! That's nuts.
