It followed me home (Part 2)

Probably my best find to date and I made it while away for the weekend, the hunt never stops. Top is a Collins Seagrave fire axe, I have yet to find a full stamp through the surface rust but judging by the shape and the opinions of others who know better than me it is very likely a Seagrave. Second is a Kelly Woodslasher Montreal pattern, paper label and sheath still intact, the whole thing is in great condition. And last is a Spiller 3lb boys axe, very good condition. Very pleased with my finds this weekend.

I'd call the woodslasher a Hudson Bay, and the spiller a felling axe personally. Great haul!

That's what I called it originally but got scolded on the axe junkies FB group haha. Not really but people thought it was a Montreal because the poll is larger than a typical Hudson Bay. But either way it's a pretty rare pattern for a woodslasher, unless the makers mark is under the sticker I don't think they came with one and I've yet to see another with the sticker intact. And yeah the Spiller is kind of in between, too big for a boys axe but kinda small for a full size felling. But either way I'm pumped on it, I have a Spiller already that I posted recently when I finished the handle, it's the same size but it's a jersey. I think I like that one better but I bought it online so it's not the same as finding one in person. I live in the region thy were made so those along with snow & nealley, rixford and others I'm always looking for but this was the first I found in person.

That's a sweet haul!

Thanks man, I was shocked to find the Seagrave at the bottom of a pile, I saw the lugs and pick and immediately got excited. Was even almost as excited for the other two as well, Spillers are probably my favorite brand and I've never seen a woodslasher in that pattern with the sticker intact.

I really like that Spiller.

Yeah it's in really good shape, the picture doesn't show it well but I really love the hand forged look to it and Spillers in general. This is my first one I've found in person, I've been looking for awhile because I live in the region they were made. So I mean I'll look for almost any kind of axe when I'm out but other than rare ones my favorites to find are ones made in the region like a Spiller.

You tend to get a bit of that on AJ's. Montreal patterns typically have a taller eye and shorter bit from what I've seen. Regardless it's a nice axe! I love that spiller. 3 lbs is my favorite weight. Hopefully you'll find marks on that Fire Axe, I've also seen an Evansville made in the same pattern.

Update on the Seagrave, I just got home and immediately went downstairs to clean up the fire axe and see if I could find a makers mark. Used 0000 steel wool as the rust isn't terrible and I knew where to look for the makers mark if it in fact was a Seagrave. And what do ya know it is a Seagrave. Didn't get the whole logo exposed but enough to definitely identify it as a Seagrave. Easily my best find yet

Clean that up, but not too much. Put it up on eBay. That's like hitting on a scratch ticket. Merry Christmas!

If you are not planning on keeping the Spiller, I would be interested in buying or trading for it. Great finds.

So it's actually marked Seagrave? That increases the value exponentially.

Yup I uncovered "warranted" and the last "mus" of legitimus all in the exact spot they should be. I was short on time so that's all I was able to do. Will try and uncover the rest later but it's enough to be able to say with certainty it's a Seagrave.

Yeah that's why I was using 0000 steel wool so I didn't scratch it up or anything. Definitely not going to do much to it, just enough that it looks a little better than now. Someone already asked to buy it on the Facebook group I posted it on, haven't talked price yet cause it's not allowed in the group but he's a firefighter so if the price is right I would like to see it go to someone like that. And I will definitely consider that, I was thinking of keeping the Spiller but I have one that's basically the same size except it's a jersey, so I'll give it some thought but if I do decide to sell it you've first chance at it.

Sorry just saw this comment, it got squished between two of mine earlier haha. Yeah someone posted one they claimed was a woodslasher/woodsman Montreal pattern and it definitely had a much shorter bit on it. It really makes no difference to me, if I go to sell it I'll just list it as a Hudson Bay/Montreal. And yeah it's hard to compete with a Seagrave but the Spiller is a close second for best find, they're one of my favorite makers. I have a 3lb Spiller jersey already so not sure what I'm going to do with this one yet, if money wasn't a factor I'd keep it but I probably have too many keepers already lol. So it's gonna be a tough decision cause I really like it but not quite as much as the jersey.

I am under the impression that it is a heavier Hudson Bay pattern a la True Temper. That “choil” or cut away reminds me of the Collins-in-a-box Hudson that can be found.

They do clean up nice though.

The “Montreal” patterns I have/have had don’t have any special difference in the polls. True Temper making and selling a “Montreal” didn’t cross my mind. The Montreal patterns look more reminiscent to their European cousins, to me at least.

Nice axes by the way.

I wouldn’t know what to do with a Seagrave.

Cash in. They go for $200-600 depending on condition. I have had one and I probably undervalued it when I sold it for $300. Incidentally, it went to a firefighter in Florida.

Is that first one a woodslasher? Looks kinda like it from the sticker but obviously they aren't the only hudson bays to have a sticker. And yeah that's what I thought, there's a bigger difference between montreals and Hudson bays than the poll being slightly bigger. But I didn't feel like arguing about it, either way it's a nice axe and pretty uncommon at the least. And yeah I didn't know what to do when I saw it, it was in a pile of other junk and a few unmarked axes so I wasn't expecting anything like that but I saw the lugs and pick and knew it was likely a Seagrave. I'm gonna lightly clean it up and probably sell it to some guy from the AJ group on FB. Haven't talked about price yet but he knows what it is and he's a fireman so I would like it to go someone like that for the right money.

Yeah the cheapest I've seen on eBay recent sales is $300, except one $100 but the person didn't know what they had. I wouldn't mind giving a little bit off for it to go to a firefighter but not a huge discount. They seem to be $300-500, maybe $600 for near mint. Although one went for $1000 but it was the one that actually says Seagrave on it which seems a lot rarer. I also have. 6lb Collins Legitimus fire axe but it's not a Seagrave, I'm having trouble accurately pricing it because I've yet to see another one. I doubt it's as valuable as a Seagrave because they're a household name but this ones really nice and at least seems to be rare.
