It followed me home (Part 2)

that is a horseshoe turning hammer--or rounding hammer. they are hard to find in that condition--no chip or nicks on the striking face edges--very rare....nice!!!

Forging Hammers. Rounding or turning hammers will be the main style of forging hammer to be used for bending the bar stock to the horseshoe shape. The same hammer style will be used for striking the creasers, fullers, punches, pritchels etc.

that is a horseshoe turning hammer...

Yes, looks like the "Chicago pattern" of horseshoe turning hammers, as shown in a 1902 catalog:

True American cruiser on the original handle,D R Barton draw knife and a couple more perfect handle screw drivers I got for 50 cents apiece.Older guy I got these from said his grandpa made the box.Six inch cant saw file was fifty cents as well, don’t think it was ever used.windows screen capture
Really nice.
One thing I gotta wonder is why they'd sell such a box that their grandfather made ?
I'm sure youyou someone who can appreciate and take care of it, but even knowing that I don't see how they could sell it.

Overall a great little haul.

20 took them. A Lenox(usa) mill bastard and a Nicholson(also u.s. made) a Plumb victory boys axe #2-5oz with original handle and an interesting 31" db haft. The old fella i bought it from said his mother used it for rubbing the clothes on the washboard! That's what all those grooves are from. 3-1/4" eye! No kerf. I'm pumped! He liked his hatchet i cleaned and re hung for him too. Said He's getting me an old snow and neally catalogue next week ! Can't wait!

I've asked my brother to keep an eye out for things I might like at the place he works. Aside from misc hand tools he came home today with this beauty. The only markings are two three's on it. Does anyone recognize it's brand though?

That’s interesting. Log marking hammer? Was it reduced in material from something larger?

I really can’t make out the mark but the triangular impress on the side makes me think of the Skookum arrowhead:

The small, deeper one could be a weight mark. I might be seeing things too.

I have a WPA Skookum hammer but the lifted photo above shows the mark more clearly.
The “3 3” you mentioned is opposite the “7 arrow”?

that's exactly what it is, they're called log brands and i imagine they werent produced as every single one was different so it makes sense that it looks strange

Agent_H the 3's are on the sides. The smaller deeper one is a three. The other mark is just from casting the head. Phantom knives, this one was cast so I think it was made for a large company. I realize I was a little unclear about the fact I'm just trying to figure out the brand. I'm trying to figure out what company used that branding stamp, not what brand is it.

Where was it found?

Bear Creek Quarry, Kelsey Ca. The previous owner frequented auctions and was a bit of a hoarder. He also did logging up by tahoe I think.

Some information on the log brands (10,000 of them) used in Oregon:

About Log Brands

Log brands are used to identify forest products. Forest products must be impressed with a registered log brand design when being transported on public highways of Oregon. There are currently over 3,500 registered log brand owners with approximately 10,000 log brands.
