Had some good luck yesterday! I’m really excited about the spokeshaves, I look forward to getting these tuned up and working.

The Kelly is in real nice shape, hard to say no for $10. I’m still on the hunt for a cruiser but in the meantime I am glad to add this 3.5lber to the mix. It would be nice to find a 30-32” handle to hang this on.

Great score! Way to go finding the spokshaves!

I picked this up for 3 bucks at a super sketchy, creepy ass flea market in Toledo, OH. He wanted 5, but I talked him down

Not anything in the way of a legible stamp even after some abrading, but looks to have been one at some point. The steel is hard and it's a nice shape, the haft is very pretty, good grain, and room to reuse. Haft was worth more than 3 alone.

The phantom bevel style is my best lead on guessing make, they don't look like Kelly or Plumb that I've seen.

I'll bring in the heel and it'll be a great user boys axe.

If it is around 2.5 lbs boy's axe head, my first guess would be Niagara Manhattan Axe

2nd guess would be Bigelow&Dowse axe

That's a wonderful handle and that whole set up is going to be a beauty.
Excellent $3 spent easily:thumbsup::cool:

What is the length of the handle and head weight?

It's attractive, looks like it would handle nicely and appears top notch all around. I'd bet it was made by Vaughan.

We would put cane tips on our hammers like that when we were doing finish carpentry in a very high end home. And we'd wear aprons (think Al Borland from Tooltime) not tool bags to protect the finishes we were walking around. The head of the hammer went down in the apron. The exposed haft got the bumper. We'd also carry them this way in the cabinet shop when working around high dollar projects.

Nice looking belknap! Nice to find them with a good stamp. That looks identical to one i scooped up and hung recently.

I think my least favorite single bit pattern
Is Michigan. But i still very much like this axe! Yours looks to be in really good shape as well (better shape than mine!) Nice score man! How much did you pay for it if you don't mind my asking? I forked out 25 bucks for mine. It was marked $38.

Thanks! Not my favorite pattern either but it’s in excellent condition, has a solid handle (I’ll probably strip and rehang it) and it’s my first Belknap. I might have paid almost twice what you did :(.

Well the fact that yours appears to be nos it looks like it was worth it! Was the poll ever even used?
Does yours have a weight stamp anywhere? That is curiously absent on mine. Definitely looks like a Kelly so i was expecting a 32 somewhere but no go.

Marking them like that on the face of the poll always interested me. Seems like if you wanted the mark to remain on the head you wouldn’t put it there.

We’ve all seen what the general populace does and did with the backend of their axes so what purpose would that serve unless it was maybe built to stay there?

Kelly/True Temper listed several of their “common” patterns as being offered with hardened polls. Could marking the poll face that be an indicator? I have several of their rafting patterns with weight marks on the poll. Some of them heavily used but the number still can be made out.

Phantom bevels, weight-marked poll, eye ridges... Just thinking out loud of course.

MC Ogden New York. This is a new one for me. I looked in to the company quickly and found a catalog from 1899 with axes and other tools. That’s about it so far.

It weighs 1lbs 11 oz. it’s in fairy good shape, nice little convex head.

Anyone heard of this maker? The stamp is light, I actually thought it was un marked until I started cleaning it up.

At an estate sale today I came across this plumb in the garage. it was only $5. I picked it up, looked it over, put it down, and had a number of insane thoughts run through my head. Like: "I don't need another Hatchet," "my wife will give me that look (again)." "I have enough stuff that needs sharpening." So I walked away and left in in the garage. When I went back to the garage and it was still there, I had some much more sane thoughts, Like: "for $5 I will regret not buying it" and "I can clean it up and sell it for more than $5...….." You get the idea. So, home with me it went!!!

It is numbered "2961" on the bottom. Anyone know how old it may be? condition is good, just needs an edge.

It's in great shape. And since you didn't ask, with that name and condition it's worth roughly $20.
