It followed me home (Part 2)

Father's Day gift for my dad. Unmarked (at least as far as I can tell without a vinegar soak) one-man crosscut saw. Found it in an antique store for a good price (replacement handle...no biggie since it'll be a wall hanger). He loved it!

Found a lot of interesting “stuff” going to barn sales around the area. This Union Tool Co head looked good. Wish I had gotten a “before” picture now. The mushrooming was pretty bad and it was jagged so I did my best with the bastard files. I used a brass brush attachment on the maker’s mark and it stripped it to steel. Don’t usually have such quick patina removal with that one but it happened after two light swipes.
.
Anyway, here it is after mushroom removal – both sides and just enough on one side to not mess with the marks. It is smooth to the touch now and should not catch on wood as it passes through.

And here is with a little gun bluing agent to hide my mistakes and reduce the noticeable material removal…

.
Anyone have any ideas about the “L” marked into it? It seems like a nice head and the poll, while not hardened, seemed to take more effort on my part to clean up.

$36, have not ID'd everything yet. The Connie is a Plumb, and an unusual ice climbing axe, made in Austria.

Kelly Works Woods Slasher and a True Temper Kelly Works Flint Edge both hafts are trash but the heads look decent.

Before anyone asks again, that is the crappy $4 tablecloth that I put down for this stuff.

I grabbed all this today, $122. Some good stuff in there including a Maine wedge, a Flint Edge, a Plumb rafting pattern, a Plumb BSA hatchet, a Norlund hatchet head among others. One is a full sized Dayton with the Kelly/True Temper eye ridges but the only stamp is "Red Diamond", new one to me.

I feel ashamed to post this picture when looking at your beautiful axes guys! But, I love axes so I will post it anyway! A brand new Hultafors Carpenters Axe. Might come in handy.....

I got tons of birch bark and was planning on making some birch tar to treat the handle, any thoughts on that?

Nice looking axe.
I think making your own Birch tar would be fun. It would make a nice thread also.

You guys are finding all kinds of nice stuff, keep the pictures coming. I am in the midst of a drought it seems.

Nice axe. Hultafors are a magnet for me. Glad you posted.

Not sure what kind of thoughts you are looking for. I've never used any kind of wood tar. However, I hope you try it and let us know how it works out. Were you planning to use it straight or mix with something (eg linseed oil and turpentine)?

Took a trip to Maine last Thursday to Sunday on the search for axes. Came home with 25 in total. Mostly cleaned up in this picture, Got a few snow and neallys, some plumbs, a rixford, a marsh and sons Oakland, a true American mann edge boys axe and 5 or six unmarked but high quality boys axes, 3 unmarked but old Maine wedge patterns. a Kelly axe mfg shingling hatchet, a true temper tommy axe, flint edge crusier and a large single bit in mint shape with eye ridges an the weight stamped on the poll. 3 Collins homesteads not to old I think but still American made. Probably missed some but a good haul all in all

I picked up a few tools today at an interesting junk sale in the middle of a small town. The couple got into a "dispute" on weather she was cheating on him. There was a lot of yelling and threatening. He picked up a pipe at one point. Things calmed down enough for me to slide him some money and get out of there. The cops were rolling in as I was driving away.

I've got plans for the hammer heads and the wrench is going to be the door latch on a small wood stove that I'm building.

Uh oh, I got competition! You did great! Where in Maine were you?

Heheh, Don't worry about me, its a once a year trip ;) Thanks, I took route 1 from Calais all the way down through past Portland and Scarborough hitting all the flea markets and antique barn and emporiums as I could, took a little trip to liberty village tools as well, it was a nice little vacation and opportunity to add to my collection.

I made a batch yesterday, but it got polluted with water and dirt so I had to throw it away.
Made a new batch today which turned out much better. I was planning to take some pictures of the distill process but the batteries was dead, I managed to charge it and take some pictures of the final product.

I'm by no means an expert in this field, still learning, but if anyone would like to see the procedure that I did, I would be glad to share it!

Hultafors are good deals! I used it straight on the handle, maybe it would treat the wood better with a little bit of linseed oil/turpentine. Got a few drops of the birch oil left so perhaps I will try it on another handle!

Made in West Germany Double Bit

I was following a recent auction for the same axe head but in worse condition. I stepped out when I was outbid only to run into this:
