It followed me home (Part 2)

Uh oh, I got competition! You did great! Where in Maine were you?
Haha! You got JB's attention, that's an accomplishment, congrats on a great haul!
JB never ceases to amaze me with the loads of great tools he rakes in!

A brand new Hultafors Carpenters Axe. Might come in handy.....

Looks very handy!

I got tons of birch bark and was planning on making some birch tar to treat the handle, any thoughts on that?

I wasn't familiar with birch bark but I just read up on it. Looks like a good simple product to make at home. As an aside, if you make your own try using the charred bark like char cloth to catch a spark. It might make terrific fire starter. The same low-oxygen environment used to make birch tar is also used to make both char cloth and charcoal.

...I was brass brushing this fireman’s axe and found it marked SHFD – figure the FD = Fire Department but I am unsure at to the SH – any ideas there would be great.

Another S.H. location in Oregon that could be its origin (in addition to Sweet Home) is St. Helens.

Hey fellas, its been awhile since I have posted on here. I have pretty much given up on trying to find any decent axes around here. However this thread did inspire me to go out and see what else I might come across. Well the junk gods were smiling on me today, ive got a total of $30 bucks Canadian in these 4 tools

She's getting good at this. TT with ridges in the eye, no poll damage, needs a new handle 'cause someone had bad aim.

Payed $25 for this bundle of axes, the only one I really wanted was the KB41 military surplus.

Säter-Banko, I don't see this getting much use in the future. Thinking about turning it into a pickaroon or something usefull.

KB41 - Swedish military surplus, the best handle I've ever held, unfortunately it's beyond redemption. Will have to get myself a new handle. Great steel.

Säter-Banko, this is also great steel. Wrecked handle. 5 screws, 1 nails instead of a wooden wedge....

Unknown axe, warped head, low quality steel.

Back when people had to make their own hafts it was common to keep a pattern around. That's what you've found there, somebody's pattern. Hang on to that.

The saw is a perforated lance tooth pattern saw - more common out west. Hardly any wear on that one. It'll clean up nice.

Thanks S_p...the pattern was a good score for sure and I got it for a buck. The saw was my biggest purchase at 20 bucks. All the teeth and rakers are nice and crisp with none missing, matching handles as well. Have looked for a makers mark or checked for taper yet. I'm also excited about the forged shovel, it was w one of your posts a while ago that got me to looking for them. This is the first one I've found worth restoring

Found a nice pair of rasps today. 14 inchers. I really like the patina on the Belknap.

Nice finds.
I have found some Sator stamped axes with very hard heat treats. Seem to me that they are of high quality.

I would have gone just for the grinder. Ohhhh yeahhhhh.....

I paid $200 for everything including a vise not pictured.

Good gawd, JB. You just keep finding the big scores. I gotta hand it to you.

You've got a couple of curious adzes there. The straight adze looks like some sort of mortising adze. The curved adze with the heavy weighted poll is a new one to me. What's the bit look like? I'm trying to figure out what that thing is for. Awesome pair of hedge trimmers. I love those handles.

And a wet grinder to boot..........you did WELL!

Yeah those hedge trimmers look like a "perfect handle" tool. Would go well with that screwdriver you found a while back. I like the Maine wedge with the skinny handle and duct tape. Awesome haul.

If you are looking at the tool below the maul then I understand. It isn't an adze, confusing angle. Have you ever seen one of those Ken-Tools bead breaking tire hammers? This is a monster version of one of those, for tractor trailers etc. I would assume.
