It followed me home (Part 2)

Wow, this thread dropped all the way to Page 2, can't have that!

I grabbed all this today for $125

Never seen one before, price was right - truly followed me home - faces were thought to be lead, but some research shows these are likely rawhide and quite hard. will oil handle slightly and place in the tool chest for a dead-blow hammer. Found near Vinita Oklahoma last week.

Neat that this mallet comes apart so the non-marring innards can be replaced. To be a 'dead blow' there'd have to be a hollow with sand or lead pellets inside.

Picked up this Tommy Axe off the bay. Couldn’t resist. It came looking like it was brand new, other than some random grind marks. The only thing to restore is the handle.

Does anyone know the period when these were produced?

These are really nice little axes! Good steel and the weight to get the job done. I used mine back in the spring to sharpen and drive stakes for a footer.

I think I will hang my next one on straight boy's axe handle.

I'm intrigued by the haft on that axe. Looks like it might be home made. In any case is would make a nice pattern.

I like the multi-meter in the wood box. Is it a Fluke?

It could have been. I'm with you on the pattern idea, but at this point I have buckets full of nice old handles. The meter is a Melville Radio Institute. Not my normal thing, but I could rip the meter out altogether and the wooden box would still be worth more than the $2 I paid for it.

Blows my mind that you find all these and nice hauls. Where the heck do you keep all this stuff?

Weeeeeell...... I do sell %90+ of what I find, but even so this is what a corner of my basement looks like. This isn't everything.

I sold an anvil this morning, and the guy that bought it brought me these awesome tongs. They are 3" long and open 15" wide. Aside from the surface rust they are flawless and operate so smoothly that they fall closed easily under their own weight. I know that some of you here would like them, I just don't think that shipping would work out. Still neat though!

Finally getting around to sharing the Walters Black Diamond boys axe head that 300Six was kind enough to part with. Just spent the morning cleaning it up!

Started off a little rough:

Gotta say that I am very happy with how well it cleaned up after a bit of quality time with a wire brush!

I'm just in the process of re-hanging it, but I'll have to finish that up tomorrow I think. Really hoping I'll be able to find the time to take it out and play around in some woods before the snow starts coming!

Was also my first chance to try out this nice little vise I picked up for $20 at a local flea market a couple weeks ago:

Was a big help! Really happy with it. :-)
Although, as you can see, my super-solid outdoor work table could certainly use some improvement.. ;-)

Nice to see that you are using hand files to shape and sharpen the Walters blade. It's so easy to believe an air or electric grinder will speed up the job but it's also too easy to make an irreversible mess.

Absolutely. It's got a beautiful complex geometry on the bit. Really a gorgeous blade! I'm very impressed by how sharp it is just from the files too. Managed to give myself a pretty deep cut when I slipped manipulating it. Nothing serious, but reinforced that it's practically razor sharp right now!

Just hung it today, letting the top of the haft soak in BLO overnight to really seal the wedge in there. I'll put some pics of it up in the other thread tomorrow, hopefully! I am absolutely loving it though. Really excited to get a chance to use it!

Today's haul, not huge but a steal at $67 total. I like the slick and the small axe (no ID yet).

On left is a gba 1 1/2 second from left is a plumb. The double I can't identify. It has ridges in the eye like Kellys do. Next is millers fall roofing hatchet. Then the small one is a baker &Hamilton clark lathing hatchet. I plan to re hang them all. I'm proud of the gba. The plumb might be to far gone as far as the edge is concerned. Any help on the double identification would be much appreciated. Forgot to mention didn't even cost me a ten spot for them all.

Nice finds, the Plumb looks fine to me, if it needs so reprofiled and sharpened it looks like there is plenty of bit left and it sure is worth it to do. That looks like a rafting pattern, lots of people really like those.

'Looks like a rafting pattern' is the operative phrase here. I haven't dared to strike something hard with the virtually unused 60-65 year old one I got from you but lots of examples of similar cedar pattern 3.2 Plumbs are coming up ordinary instead of hard poll on here. Certainly the generous poll and the bevelled corners strongly suggest Rafting/Construction/Miners but mushrooming (such as seen in this example too) suggests otherwise.

Regardless, the pictured example is far from being too far gone to save as far as I can tell. Far from it. That's a lot of fars.

Sweet I'm new at this whole axe collecting. I'll reprofile the plumb and sharpen it. Thanks for the info fellas.
