It followed me home (Part 2)

Nice finds, the Plumb looks fine to me, if it needs so reprofiled and sharpened it looks like there is plenty of bit left and it sure is worth it to do. That looks like a rafting pattern, lots of people really like those.

Any suggestions for the length of haft for the gba, the plumb, and the double? The gba I was thinking 19 inch haft.

Just won this off e-bay (can't wait to get it in my hands), and have a basque axe on the way as well that I got in a private sale.

I'm not sure what most of the are yet but I cleaned up the very nice 3lb Kelly Perfect. I think the rest are no names but I'll see.

Today's haul, not huge but a steal at $67 total. I like the slick and the small axe (no ID yet).

JB, or anyone reading, the axe directly below the red handle, what do we call that pattern? Is that an American axe or were there American outfits that made them? Kinda interested in getting a lighter weight one at some point.

Looks like an older Hults Bruks. Definitely European, not sure how you would refer to the pattern though.

That looks like a Montreal pattern. Still being marketed in Canada (made by Hults Bruk), and some vintage ones made in Canada by Walters are around.

These followed me home among lots of other stuff I got 32 items for 43 $. Collins, the black lathing hatchet is a plumb 32oz, the beat up hatchet I plan to modify into a tomahawk.

I'm curious to see what you ended up with. Nice looking gear there regardless.

I finally got a small lot to post! $12 for all.

From the top down:

1) Thick, old leather...might be a single hide, or the crap pressed stuff. Either way it should make a great strop;

2) 8-lb sledge:

3) A True Temper Michigan pattern axe (on an replacement handle). Of note, this should help confirm the red heads with a letter/number stamp are likely of True Temper origin:

4) Shelton Plane:

5) Unmarked hammer

6) A Craftsman replacement handle (warped, but could be a good template or a candidate for straightening):

7) A Boss-brand maul (made in Japan):

8) A really, really rusty old Estwing hatchet:

9) Some USA shovel with a nice wooden handle (my fiberglass one at home is broken):

Hey guys, first time buying an old axe head, just wondering how I did. I believe it's a Plumb, it weighs about 3 1/4 lbs.

If it's suitable I'd really like to hang it and get some use out of it.

Thanks guys. Should be a fun project, will be the first time. I've been watching quiet a few videos on how to do it!

This last weekend I happened upon a Wards Master Quality one man crosscut saw.
It is a 42” perforated lance tooth. No crack in the handle and the blade is straight.

The marks are pretty light but readable:

Looks like it still has some life in it yet?

It has a helper/aux handle but I don’t know if it’s original – the pin is missing and looks like someone rigged something up to keep it on there.
It tightens up and seems like it wants to stay put but I haven’t used it yet.

This other handle is one that I picked up several weeks ago from a garage sale.
It is intact but is a Disston so I figure if the one it came with has issues I can swap it out.

So, it seems I bought a handle and then found the saw – backwards approach or maybe meant to be?

My folks have property on the coast that is full of smaller pine/fir up to about 1’ in diameter and we usually run through it every couple of years to clear sick/windfall and view obstructing trees.
The chainsaw has been our main tool but these last couple of years my axes have been used by the 3 of us.

Always results in a fire, some drinks, and some laughter.

I’m not a saw pro and I know that sharpening them is an art but from what you see from the pictures, it doesn’t look too far gone does it?
Seems like 80% of the blade is sharp enough to slice your fingers/hand if you pick it up carelessly.
The rakers seem equal or a hair longer than the teeth.

Someone took care of it - I haven't cleaned it all yet.

I can't be sure from the pictures about the rest of the saw but this section looks like it will need jointing and lowering the raker height.

That looks like a nice saw. Well worth getting it sharpened.

Bob

p.s. just to pick a nit the medallion is on the wrong side. At least I've never seen that on any saw.

Thanks for the input Bob. I haven't done anything to it except take a few quick pictures.

Medallion on the other side? Quick fix on that one.

I got these today for $40. Two Flint Edge Connies, one is a great head under some surface rust (junk handle), the other one is VERY GOOD original condition with a top quality head and top quality solid handle. I have not ID'd the hatchet, and I can't wait to restore and hang that cool hammer.

Edit- the upside down Connie is a Collins Red Knight.
