It may fail my rope test, but the S35VN Sebenza still works fine for EDC.

But no, I don't think the cutting board had anything to do with it since I have used the same cutting board for all of the recent tests, and the two S35VN knives were the only ones with the edge flattening issues. :)

Just wanted to thank you for the honest review despite knowing the fanboys would have a run at you.
Great data points.

Data points such as yours give me the opportunity to consider how the blade and steel in question will react to to my personal use (or perhaps even abuse).
For me if something has to be cut it will be cut no matter what brand or steel is in my pants.
For someone else that may not be a priority or requirement.

Thanks also for your thoughtful and tactful replies.

Much appreciated

Has any testing been done on the Nyala? I was wondering if the thicker grind would perform differently.

Please folks, do not worry about this steel because of one test that had the same results on two differant brand knives(Spyderco and CRK).

Chris Reeve would never put a steel on a knife unless he was sure the steel was good to go. Believe me, he and many others have thoroughly tested this steel.

He tested the steel(as Anne said in this thread), Sal at Spyderco did a CATRA test on some Native 5's with S35VN last week(the other knife the tester had a problem on), and Ankerson did a good test on the same knife. They all tested just fine.

The steel is a good one folks, and there... IS NO PROBLEM WITH THIS STEEL...

Please people, do not let One test by a young tester that is just starting to test steels/knives sway you away from a good steel.
I think when the tester starts using a softer pine wood, and cuts with the grain of the wood, he will get a more true result.

Yes the Native 5 did very well in my testing and I just finished shooting a video for my EDC series with it, should be up later today.

The more I work with S35VN the more I find that's it's an interesting steel, jury is still out, more testing and work to do ect.

Ken44, do you have any links to Sal's CATRA results. I know he said he was doing some testing but I haven't seen any results in the threads about this steel. Maybe in the Spyderco forum?

CTS re-tested the Native 5 and it came out really well. He's also moving to a different test set-up. I'm looking forward to him re-testing the S35VN Sebenza that he used with this new test method.

Gonna check out your video Jim - thanks for mentioning it!

The video is up and in the review forum. :)

Lol you act like I've been trying to sway people from buying a knife in this steel. I don't need you to speak for me, as I have been saying the exact same this you just said this whole time.

I can't speak for any other members but you shouldn't think for a minute that your testing and other videos don't influence your audience a lot.

The evidence was presented right before my eyes, how could I not believe what you showed me to be happening to these S35VN blades? I really like your changing to the softer blade stop - (peice of softer wood). I think it took a variable out of the equation and I'd like to request that you re-test the Sebenza to see if it does okay like the Native 5 did.

That opens another can of worms though, since the Cold Steel Voyager and some other cheaper knife went right through your old testing method like a hot knife through butter with no damage whatsoever,

Hmmm - I think I'm gettting myself confused again so I'll shut up. Hope you re-test that Sebenza though - that might show something else now.

Oh I have no delusions; I'm sure that people watch my videos and swear off the steel altogether. But, I don't like it when people act like I am crusading against the steel or something. I don't have enough personal interest in the steel to have some sort of agenda, that's just silly.

The main thing with S35VN is that it's still too new for the manufactures to really know what it will do and not do and at what hardness range and HT recipe to use for sure.

A lot more miles under different kinds of uses and a variety of knives will be needed until those questions are answered.

Those questions won't be answered today, tomorrow, next week, or even possibly next year because it's an on going process and a lot more testing is needed yet.

It took them awhile to figure out S30V so I wouldn't except it to be any different with S35VN.
