It's Official!!

Though I'm a "short-timer" here at HI, Bawanna seems like an excellent choice... He is obviously well liked and respected and I'm sure he will do a fine job.

Thank you Bawanna for accepting the position... Your willingness to do an often thankless job is much appreciated. Good on you Sir (and I don't throw my "Sir's" around to just anyone)!! :)

Speaking of Mt. Everest... ;), for all of you other "climbing junkies" like myself out there, check out the "Everest 2016 Coverage" from Alan Arnette on his blog at;

http://www.alanarnette.com/blog/

He does an excellent job of reporting (almost daily) on all of the action on Everest and Lhotse... so far it's been a fairly "normal" climbing season with none of the horrible "drama" of the last two years. Lot's of summits from both sides with very few deaths.

Joe, just back home and seeing your name highlighted in Commissar Red cheers me up. It's actually great to see you finally recognized properly. Gee. I hope this doesn't go to my head and make me be nice to you.....look into my eyes....you will buy cigars...big, FAT cigars....you feel sorry for the good doctor.....you will also be glad to see him.....and bring the cigars.....

I think Bawanna is more of a political officer than a commissar. Zampolit Bawanna does have a certain ring to it...

here y'go: sez 'Company Political Officer' - would make a good avatar. vlad the impaler, tsar of all the russias will be proud...

Well I'm kind of partial to my "Pala" avatar but this does look appealing. I'd of course have to write down what it says and keep the note on me in case anybody asked. Even translated I'm not sure what the heck a political officer might be. Like wise no clue what a commissar might be. I don't get out much and certainly never leave the US.

Have to run now, have some cigar shopping to do.

One of the pitfalls of the actual moderator title is it limits my jousting sometimes and I do enjoy a good on line fisticuff from time to time.

Well I gave it a try, I still got Pala in my signature line. Wonder how many people see that and think I'm Pala. Wouldn't hurt my rep one bit. I actually don't have a rep, if I was Pala I'd for sure have a rep.

the political officer is the equivalent of a chaplain, but more like a chaplain from the spanish inquisition. he or she maintains the orthodoxy of your political commitment to the party line. he of course spies and listens in, eves-dropping and recording any faux pas you might make. he has the power to banish you to the gulags, or shoot you at his whim. if he asks you to come see him to discuss your commitment, worry. a lot.

pretty much like a forum mod then.

a commissar was a more senior political officer who worked at regimental and divisional levels, looking after the political health of the more junior political officers below regimental levels. he/she also reviewed the reports from the lower POs and could over-rule them. kinda the last level of appeal, tho i gather he/she'd more likely increase than decrease any punishment.

Sounds a little like a rat to begin with. Having whims to banish or shoot sounds kind of powerful and appealing, although I'd of course never shoot nobody that didn't sorely deserve to be shot.

Commissar I guess is more like a Super Mod, not to be messed with.

McLoving it! However, Vlad scores very highly on my heros list.

hmm, not to blow my own horn (but i just did ;)) i am a super-mod and admin on the Outpost Firewall User Support Forum

sadly, they were bought out by yandex & stopped trading in january, and the forum will shut down at the end of the year. we've arranged for a sub-forum on wilders security forum we'll unhide then. over there i'm demoted back to plain old sub-forum moderator.

p.s. - the vlad i respect is the romanian one, not the head of the present day russian kgb/fsb that runs the commissariat. he's the 'first citizen' of russia and presides over them all.

oddly, 'first citizen' was the only official title of the roman emperors, as courtesy they were referred to as 'caesar', the first 'first citizen'. that transmuted to the geman 'kaiser' who was technically emperor of the holy roman empire - the remains of the western roman empire. likewise in the eastern byzantine branch, after the turks took over the city of constantinople, the russians considered themselves the eastern empire, and called their ruler 'tsar' their form of 'caesar' another first citizen. vlad putin might just as well call himself tsar as it seems he will extend his rule to be for life.

Not in any attempt to out toot your horn but I'm also a super mod on the other forum.

Lots more buttons and forms of torture etc. Course don't matter much over here as with very few exceptions we have some pretty outstanding members and we can tolerate Bookie most of the time too.

he's a national hero over there in romania. when he was ruler, the turks were going to invade. he impaled many thousands of turks alongside their route of march. the sight of turkish men, women and children impaled as far as the eye could see on both sides of the road for miles. it shook the janessaries, and the sultan so much they turned around, went home as fast as they could march and cancelled the invasion.

Sounds like a real sticker of invaders to me.

i use midgets-r-us, you can order them online. the fat ones go further, they roll. unmodified. the skinny ones need to have fletching and are best thrown with an atl-atl thrower.

he was a hostage as a youth and confined in a muslim school. apparently the teachers liked little boys & there is some indications vlad was abused & spent the rest of his life getting even. he was also a bit rough on his own people, punishing the occasional 'rebellion' by impaling the rebels, their families, their relatives, neighbours, friends, acquaintances, elderly or children included. he'd eat his meals and drank his wine while his men entertained him with the impalings. all in all, a very nice man. he especially enjoyed an old lady they impaled and laughed as she 'danced'.
