It's only 4:30 and I already have chemical burns...

Oh, and no, do not just press it flat against the belt. That will let it grind into the spine and you do not want to do that.

230, I am no pro on doing what you are attempting. I personally thought you were only going to strip and sharpen it and would not go for a satin finish unless I was prepared to remove the handles. What I will tell you though before you get frustrated is what Pohan Leu told me when I asked him for help. The best advice anyone can give in my opinion, "If you are unsure of how to do something, walk away from the grinder and do not come back to it until you are completely sure how". It worked for me.

Alot of guys on here do the satinizing without removing the handles so they would be better off to advise you. I did my skinny ash, which had the same saber look to it, with the handles off. I would run all the flats on the platen and the convex on the slack belt. My "guess" with the handles on and no real way to gradually work the flats together with the convex would be to use only the slack belt from the plunge line to the tip, keeping the belt off of the spine but close to it (you don't want to grind away to much of your edge either).

Good luck if you continue:thumbup:

Well it looks like it is not really full convex from your pic. More like saber or am I just seeing things? It depends what you want to accomplish.

Maybe if you feel uncomfortable then send it to Garth?

It's convex with a v edge, it's now full convex. It might be the crap lighting in the pics. I think i'm done now, it's hair splitting sharp, but i'm certainly no ban on the finish front but i'm happy with it.

This is it before sharpening, just need to clean up a couple scratch marks and the talon hole/handle/spine and i'll be done.

The best part is, I didn't destroy the knife.

Sorry for the crap pic

Awesome 230! I was getting worried. I know how bad it feels to think you are going to screw up such a nice knife.

I had to take the sander to the actual knife and give it a ghetto satin. After stripping the coating off, the metal was basically black. Comparing it to actual satin, it's obviously not factory but the grind is all going the right way and it's pretty smooth, but it looks a HELL of a lot better than the stripped blade did.

I have a habit of just jumping into things, atleast it worked out for me. Now I have my poor mans NMFBM LE.

I took a better picture.

I was so freaking scared grinding on this knife, sharpening on a sander is one thing, grinding the whole freakin' thing scared the hell out of me.

How did I do, really?

Yeah, when I meant flat, I meant not quite touching the edge, not quite touching the spine.

Looks like you did great to me all things considered:thumbup:

I still think these "full convex" blades, atleast the skinny ash, are not true convex to the spine.

Maybe my definition of full convex is off:D

Good job 230, man that was pretty quick. Looks like your all ready to start beating on something.

The tree's are going to split out of fear before you even chop them.
Nice work 230!

230, did your blade have a line of INFI pits on the flat just below the spine?

here was mine after some work.
