Here's the challenge: NO ZTs.

It's not that none of them might fit the bill, it's just that I have handled pretty much everything but an 888, 454, and a 392, so I'm familiar with what's out there in that regard. I'm not for assisted knives at all, so the 300 series is right out as I don't like to gamble with finding a good "de-assistable" one OR voiding my warranty by drilling a detent hole.

Roughly, the parameters are:
Blade (read: available cutting surface) length of at least 3.25"
Not a lockback
Unassisted
No serrations
Under $400 for a reasonably good condition iteration of the knife
Pocket clip positionable for tip-up carry

Pretty much everything else is free form. It just needs to be big, lock open, not have a spring or serrations, and be cheap enough that I can justify using it.

Hmmmm - you said to scratch AT, so takes the 0200 and 0550 out of the game...and the blade length kills the Grayman Dua. There's the Satu; but that would be over budget. I guess I haven't been paying enough attention to the folder world, because I've got nothing.
Wait - those ugly things the Uber guy was selling looked like they might fill the bill; but I don't know where they fall price-wise.

You might find yourself surprised with how "beefy" the Lionsteel SR 1 is once in hand.

Beefy as in at least a 0.15" thick blade?

Weight constraints?

Upper blade length limits?

Under $400 brand new street price?

Cutting edge minimum of 3.25"?

What about the beefiness of the blade tip?

You can get a lot of quality, value and performance out of Reate Horizon, Hills and District 9.

Sticking with previous behaviors, you're likely to sell it anyway eventually, I'll both second others' suggestions and ignore your parameters.

Grayman Dua.

Please at least look into it.

My dpx t3 is a brick sh--house. Most seem to like the 2.0 versions available now. Also I think the spyderco vallotin sub hilt is one solidly put together knife and is the most UN-Spyderco like knife they sell. KEEP all the others

For 'beefy' you can't beat a Benchmade Adamas. And it'll live up to its overbuilt-ness in use, unlike certain titanium framelocks...

BM's new Loco fits the bill; well except for the "spring".
The Loco's omega springs are the heaviest gauge springs BM makes....and I have handled a lot of omega springs.
But whatever....it's just an observation.
Good luck in your quest!

Not a bad suggestion. I haven't held a unibody SR1 IIRC.

I would say that is a good suggestion but to ignore the Aluminum version. I've seen videos of them being "hard used" and maybe just slightly over used and it failed. So maybe Ti is the way to go there.

I would also say that depending on the model some of the larger emersons definitely feel pretty beefy.

Grayman Satu, Benchmade Adamas, Spyderco Tuff, Spyderco LionSpy, Lion Steel SR1.

Those are the suggestions that come to my mind when I think non-ZT overbuilt folders under $400.

Titanium Militarys pop up on the exchange all the time. $180-$250

Snagged this one for $175!

Do some digging and you might be able to find a Three Sisters Forge Gorgon. Southern Grind Bad Monkey comes to mind as well. Also, the Brous T4 and Mini Division.

My suggestion would likely not fit due to your lock back restriction but here goes.

The soon to be available Cold Steel 4-Max is going to be beefy with strength to match.

4.5 MM - 4 inch blade of CPM-20CV steel
Titanium liners
Tri-AD lock
G10 scales
USA Made

Should be under $400

If you jump over to the Cold Steel Forum they have some pics of the prototype. I think this knife is going to redefine "beefy".

Outside of that, Benchmade Adamas, Ontario Hossom Retribution 1

The Benchmade 760 is one of the beefiest that I own, might be hard to find these days though. The blade is so heavy it almost unbalances the whole knife.

The Spyderco Vallotton is also pretty beefy, in that it has thick liners and a relatively thick blade.

In reality the Spyderco Manix 2 (either size) is about as beefy as I need:

The CRKT M16 and M21 are pretty beefy knives. Mine seem to be well made but the blade steel is pretty mundane, and the lock strength is questionable.

This is a whole group of beefy blades (I just happened to have this photo handy):
