Not to offend, but we'll probably need a bit more information before we can really help you. Some info that would really help us help you, do you want a fixed blade or folder? How large? Traditional or modern? What kinds of things will you be doing with the knife?

If you want a folder, I would recommend taking a long, hard look at the Ontario Rat 1 and 2, or the ESEE Avispa or Zancudo.

Don't know what tasks you have in mind, but for that much, the biggest bang is for the Buck (pardon the witticism). Specifically, a Buck 110 from the blue W-store. At about $27, which is what I recently paid, you will be getting a tremendously durable, extremely sharp (and capable of being made much sharper), and infinitely warranted knife made in Idaho USA. If you are new to knives, it will set the bar at an appropriate level. If you are not, it will reacquaint you with what a well-built knife should be.

But then, your moniker indicates you already know this. So you might consider a Victorinox. The one-hand-opening Trekker model is outstanding.

Ontario Rat 1
Kershaw Thermite (if you want assisted open)
Spyderco Tenacious (if you can find one at the $35 price point, they usually run $5 - $7 more, but a Google search shows me at least two places selling for $34)

Svord Peasant, Opinel, Douk douk, Higo no Kami, there's also a whole mess of Kershaws in that price range like the Thermite, Leek, CQC's, etc.

An Opinel of your choosing. Once properly sharpened it will slice better than just about any knife. The carbone models are easier to sharpen and the stainless have better edge retention.

Yes, without more perameters I would sugest the Ontario Utilitac II, Rat series, or Esee avispa/zancudo. My personal favorite in this price range right now is the kershaw tremor. Recently discontinued, kershawguy has them for $25 shipped right now! Heck of a deal. http://kershawguy.com/products-page/featured-items/1950-tremor-closeout/

Just checked and the price went up to $35! Glad I got in on the bottom floor!

What is the Spyderco up top? I remember wanting one when they came out.

I'll say the Buck as well if you don't have one already. The 110 is a good serviceable blade. It has a nice feeling overall with it's combination of materials. Hefty solid well polished brass. Beautiful stained wood inlay that adds warmth. A stainless steel blade that will take on a hair popping edge or dice up boxes all day. Tough enough to be in a bikers hand. Classy enough to be in a gentlemens hand. And has with stood the test of time long enough to be in an old timers hand.

And if you ever become a steel snob. You can ship her in for a better, stronger blade. Upgrading to the BOS heat treated S30v. Like I wish to do some day.
