Izula as a tactical fighter?

imagine knife fighting as any kind of fight, boxing or wrestling or other kind of martial arts.
it can be in and out quick or you can wrestle for couple minutes. the point is to inflict as much damage as possible and prevent/protect as much as possible in the process.

In a real fight, not sparring sessions, one will not be doing any of those tricks that we see on videos, or movies. Those are for either REAL professionals or wannabes. Most of us falls in the middle or the later. Your fight shouldn't last couple seconds. Damage is inflicted because YOU JUST DONT SEE IT COMMIN. For that, i will use whatever that i am most comfortable and confident. For me, i would choose Izula. my.02

Worst thread, ever. The whole thing is one long, mind numbing string of cliches and regurgitated quotes from a lifetime of mainlining SWAT magazine BS and the mental lubing that Kali instructor gives you while he slides his hand in your pocket. Can we put this in Practical Tactical where it belongs so the OP can get an answer from the hordes of overweight ex-spetsnaz/special forces/swat/ninja all-at-once folks that dwell on this kind of fantasy daily?

Winners drip....But losers gush  So says my Kali instructor.

After a year of training in a brutal family system of Kali, I've learned enough to know how freaking dangerous knives and sticks are when people know how to use them. You need to do force on force to realize how quickly you can end up dead playing with knives. The line between dripping and gushing can be very thin, it's not hard to imagine two guys inflicting fatal cuts, but neither realizing it before it is too late.

There are so many rediculous misconceptions repeated every time someone brings up fighting with a knife. People need to go out and get serious training by someone who has dealt with knives, for real, before they repeat more unrealistic nonsense. I'm guessing it's the same guys who shoot at a square range, standing still, at stationary targets and then think that they are gunfighters.

Guns aren't guarenteed victory over a knife. Whoever coined the term "don't bring a knife to a gunfight" would be suprised if he ever got caught up close by someone who knew what they were doing. Terrain and surprise can do that, even to the most aware. It's hard for a defender to shoot someone when his target suddenly appears 45 degrees to his center and cuts him 3 or 4 times by the time he realizes what is happening, because he was too busy worrying about drawing his gun to pay attention to the fight. If the defender does get a shot off, it can be very easy for the attacker to continue cutting and moving even after being shot, unless hit in just the right place at just the right time.

Be careful guys, you never know what others are capable of :(

Sing it brother. Excellent post.

I think knife fighting is when you've either emptied your mag and your spare mag and the three mags you keep in your bag that you keep close by, and the four mags you keep n the car..... Yet are still Alive and haven't taken out your attacker. And police aren't there yet, or you have a malfunction that requires you to switch to your back-up. That's theo ly reason you would need to get in a knife fight. If some one pulls a knife on me I'm getting my arse outta there unles others are endanger. And I'm not an armchair guru that knows nothing I have had a knife pulled on me and I used a news paper to disarm the other person thank God I didn't have to pull my knife.
For the record I hate tactical things when arm chair gurus are talking about it.

I wanted to have a serious conversation about it and that's why I tried to kill off the stupid posting of equally stupid pictures. Once a thread devolves into speaking with cat pictures or the emotional breakdowns of imaginary commanders of imaginary spaceships, it's basically done, isn't it? One of the reasons to avoid Practical Tactical is to avoid the kids and bizarro crap that goes on there, that forum died years ago. So, I guess any serious conversation of what you could do with one of these knives is dead here as well. Probably for the best because if that happened then it would probably devolve into some demented, "My Kali/Arnis/Escrima/Silat is better than your's." You can sing that to the crazy, "My milkshake is better than your's" song. :D

Here, go get started: "How many tymes do i has to stabz a beotch to get them outta my crib, yo."

Have fun. :D

I totally agree don but I being a minor am. It sure why you need to generalize all kids. I haven't participated in the stupid my Kali is better than your other crap.

Interesting thread.

Things get dicey when adrenaline pumps. Tunnel vision, weakness, dry mouth, etc. Most people I talk to have a very overrated vision of themself in any combat or emergency situation. They see themself as a spectator might instead of a participant. Having taught martial arts/defensive tactics for almost 30 years, I've seen many people who BELIEVE they are combat ready because they win a trophy or can jump, kick, break boards, etc, while training in karate uniform.
Some of my own students talk ignorantly about combat because they've never been in a real fight.
Example of 1st day knife training: I and student kneel facing one another. I smash rubber knife across students arm. Student gasps, grabs attacked arm with other hand. I slice across throat. Done. A completely contrived situation to teach about natural body instincts than footwork or positions.
Will an izula work? Sure.
