My grandfather hand an old hand-crank bench grinder on his workbench. I suspect using it to sharpen pocket knives was also part of the “old normal”…
Years ago here, fellers used to come round on bicycles, sharpening knives by bicycle :D


One of the last traditional Barlow makers at Stannington near Sheffield was using a foot-powered grinding wheel into the 60's apparently :thumbsup:

I have my grandfather's hand-cranked wheel and a couple of his knives. I suspect you're right.
By the looks of most of the old knives I find around here at flea markets, etc, sharpening with electric bench grinders was quite common, too. Most have some really rough looking old blades, and are not even worth the $2 or $5 asking price.

Yes, Dremels have been a bit of a curse too! :eek:
