January 2022 Buck of the Month - The 55 S35VN Red Canvas Micarta

I sorta like the used micarta look.
The shiny micarta finish on the SK Blades knives is nice too.

Which is this supposed to have? Is it supposed to be shiny/gloss finish?
If you like the used look, scrub it with Dawn dish soap and a toothbrush. I just tried that and yikes, very used looking.

wonder if some soap and hot water and old toothbrush would remove it to clean. its not burnt is it, just like Craig said some polishing compound residue? shouldn't have come that way regardless though
Tried that. Didn't seem to remove anything but sure made it look old real quick.

I oiled it up after the scrubbing and let some oil sit on the scales for a while. That brought the rich red back but the brown discoloration is still there.

With all of the knives I've purchased one or two iffy examples are acceptable. This one will be a user.

Thank you for the suggestions!

good info Jeff.. thanks. wonder if it's burned then......

Mine arrived, with the same look. Just gave it a quick rub before going out to shovel more snow... didn't seem to make a big difference. Will try the soap and water/toothbrush but I'm thinking this is it. I just picked up a small, script Buck, open top sheath for the 501. I'll probably make this a user and carry it that way. Looks kinda cute. Maybe it can take the mnandi's place on a Sunday or two 🤔 hmmm?

You know, I wondered "is this different from the release picture?" So I went back to the announcement post (second page for me) and what do you know, that picture looks just like the ones they are sending out. (Gomer Pyle voice, "go oolly, would ya look at that!"). So I'm going to be quiet here, apologies to Buck, because I got enthralled by a flash of red and a pretty face. My bad 😂

You are absolutely correct! I checked after you posted. Yep, looks just like the photo. I too was blinded by the red.

Received mine today:

Fresh off the postal truck, and straight into my pocket:

It feels great in my hands. This is my only 55, and I didn't realize it'd be this slim. The transitions between the micarta and bolsters are smooth. The micarta is nice to the touch and I think it looks better in person than on the internet. It's more of a rusty red than a Crayola red.

Mine arrived today! Along with an ebony (darker colored wood, brass bolsters) 55 "The Knife" for carry! These are joining my stag 55 420HC and 55 February 2020 BOTM: Granadillo (lighter colored wood, nickel silver bolsters), Satin S30V, 1 of 180 made.

Got mine last night. It took a little USPS vacation, floating around the mail system over the weekend, so I had to wait.

I do love the 55 in general. It’s a great knife. This one is nowhere near a collectors piece by any stretch of the imagination though, so I suppose I’ll make it a user.

It’s about on par with the standard mass production 55’s in terms of F&F. Uneven bolsters with grind marks, a chip in the blade (cutting edge), and a lockbar you have to push down about 95% of the way for the blade to disengage. Not happy, but not entirely disappointed because I now have an “upgraded” (in terms of material/steel) user.
