Japanese exotic steels

I could use some more Japanese steel.
I think hap 40 is the best I have used.

Nice looking piece, Skar.

Based on my very positive experiences with HAP40 in the Endura platform, I purchased a HAP40 Japanese kitchen knife (240mm Gyuto). It's become my favorite tool in the kitchen. The edge just lasts and lasts. Corrosion resistance is better than most carbon steels, barely forming a patina in my use. It sharpens easily enough and is tough enough that I've had no issues in that area. I'd like to see more Spydercos in this steel, or perhaps something similar, i.e. high hardness, stain resistant, good toughness, with good feel on the sharpening stones.

Evany,

Thanks for sharing. Excellent feedback. I share many of the same sentiments with HAP40. I was most pleased with the sharpening response myself. Seems to love any edge you feel like running on it. I'm glad that Spyderco chose to make it a more widely available steel, compared to their other sprint offerings.

A Sukenari was on my list for a time, although I find I quite enjoy sharpening my kitchen knives, so a "lesser" steel suits me just fine. Perhaps one day.

Please make Caly 3 in dark blue G-10 and R2 blade steel.

I believe sal has stated in the past that the reason for not running SG2/R2 was due to cost of sourcing the steel. Might have had something more to do with a quantity issue (related to cost), though, too. Too much of the cost would befall the ELU, which in their opinion, would result in poor sales, across a full Seki/Moki run.

As a suggestion slightly off topic, sal has mentioned a future run of Japanese models in SPY27, which I think would suit well with your suggestion of dark blue g-10, since the SPY27 models are supposed to be in cobalt blue handles. Given much of the idea and information about SPY27 has been comparable to SG2/R2, this may be a consideration. G-10 is a cost increase in-and-of-itself though, within the Japanese models.

I'd like to see more Super Gold myself but as I recall it was like a past days super steel so not popular enough for another run.

That's the HAP40 J knife I have. Outstanding in every way.

Spyderco should really look at using HAP40 full time. It is such a well balanced steel and could be run harder as needed.

I will be holding my breath for a HAP40 Stretch 2. Make it a sprint if you must. Drop point blade shape please.

That is all.

Hi Dan35,

There are many good steels and I would venture to guess that Spyderco uses more of them than most. It is always a discussion as to what steels to use for what models. I don't know that any one steel always has center stage.

All you are going to need is a time machine.

Lots of us like the options and models made available by Spyderco. Keep up the innovative work and thanks to your team.

Yeah the only onion in the ointment right now is those special orders have been locked out. Looking at some of the prior talk the specials can take years to over a decade to go from idea to production. Even if they opened the books today not much will happen for some time.

PARA 3 in ZDP-189...how about everything in ZDP-189!!
Jump on a ZDP right now if you want it. Uncertain future. Selling out everywhere.
It was supposed to be discontinued, but then they filled more orders for Stretch 2's, this was like two years ago. Then they took a bunch of special orders (Hitachi).
Now... all the ZDP is going away again, and all the models but Endura or Stretch 2, cannot remember which, is discontinued! I really want a Stretch and some ZDP kitchen knives, there is no steel like ZDP! Well, Cowry-X, but that is not nearly as groovy! 😂
True. There's much to enjoy in the moment and there will be much to enjoy in the future.
This is the key to not tripping out over missing a beautiful sprint of this or that. There's gonna be more PM2s, more Stretches, in more steels, more variations being released alongside original counterparts... even if you miss out, just wait a few months, you might get it then. I'm losing no sleep over my S90V Yojumbo. The universe will bring mine to me, haha.

Mhmm, I remember seeing talks in 2015 that the Civilian 2 was long, long awaited and in the works. It takes a while.
