Japanese exotic steels

A 3v military would be sweet , also military, paramilitary with a rust proof steel that can be flat ground with ti hardware would be very cool

Sal, you already mentioned bringing a Delica and Endura G10 run back, I suggest adding a premium Japanese steel to these. Frankly I don't think anyone here would care which steel you picked, obviously this would sell well any way you go with it, and would be an overnight legend.

I am aware this thread is over a year old but find it still relavent. Along with yxr7, i have been very interested using sg2(R2). I just bought a kitchen knife with it (can't use it til Christmas), but hear nothing but good things about it. I'm sure it would excel on a folding knife as well.

A friend of mine (a cook) says its his favorite steel out there right now. He's not really a knife guy, but can apprceiate a good knife. And i find his feedback always holds true in terms of knowing what he's talking about from actually using and maintaining his kitchen knives, and not looking at stats/compositions.

I was really hoping that SRS15 would be the steel for the new Seki sprints. It's my new favorite Japanese steel in the form of a gyuto in my kitchen. I think SRS15 could be a game changer for Spyderco.

Agreed, SRS 15 is awesome on my akifusa gyuto. Laser beam man

I'm a little bummed they went with V-toku 2
But we'll have to wait and see what spyderco does with the heat treatment.

I'm hope they juice that baby at 63hrc and up. That would be badass.

I'm worried they'll cater to the lowest common denominator and put it at 60 HRC to make it more durable.
I've used V-toku on some gyutos, it's good but I personally wasn't blown away. It's more balanced then super blue and tougher then white steel but it was pretty vanilla.
It's a good workhorse steel. It should sharpen good.

We'll just have to wait and see.
Everything is in the air until we get it in our hands so don't put too much stock in my assertions.

We could consider SRS 15 for a future run.

YES! That would be amazing to have a piece in my pocket!
Is SRS-15 similar to Cruwear but with more Chromium? (13%)

Does it sharpen as easily as Cruwear?

It's a little different in chemistry but very close in performance.

Sharpens great with amazing edge stability for a stainless. Takes a smokin' edge off the spyderco UF benchstone

It reminds me of if CTS XHP and Cru-wear had a baby

I've been surprised how similar the performance is to Cru-wear except that with the extra carbon and chromium SRS 15 has a higher working Hardeness at 64 HRC (that's what the hardeness of the Akifusa gyuto is at)

Very unique composition, nothing quite like it here in the West.

I've had this knife since last Christmas, it's been a pure joy to use and cook for the family.

Laser beam man

More super blue please.
Heck yeah, you see the new 2018 Calypso Sprint in the catelog?

I saw that one, anything clad from Japan gets annexed from me by a family member, so I keep buying them until they get tired and I get to keep one.

The Japanese as a culture have a reverence and a passion for steel, in all of its forms, but especially in blades. That's probably why this thread exists. Seki City in the Gifu Prefecture has been a city focused on the making of fine blades for over a thousand years.

Thanks,

I have read that Knives (such as the Caly 3.5 zdp/420) marked simply “Japan,” are made in another factory within Seki City, called “Moki.” Is this a fact?

I am a union man and a proud American. I take great pride in seeing "made in America" on things, especially knives. However, I take just as much pride in seeing "made in Japan" on a knife because I know the Japanese are so passionate about steel. Thanks Sal, keep the great knives coming.

I really don't think you'd regret it, Sal. I predict the popularity would take off like wildfire, similar to the Cruwear phenomenon.

In light of the SRS-15 possibility, I just wish the blue/gray FRN color hadn't been "used up" on the V-Toku sprint. Such a sweet color!

This is exactly why I continue to grow my Spyderco collection. Excellent cutting tools, creative/innovative designs, exotic steels, and the ability to interact directly with those who steer the ship. There’s no other company out there with this degree of collaboration with enthusiasts. Thanks, Sal!!
