Another custom knife maker from South Africa that is doing amazing work is Jason Guthrie. Jason started making knives this year only and his books are already closed. He makes the Ranger series that is available in a number of blade, handle and finishing options, including the Ranger Elite series that goes above and beyond with amazing damasteel blades, for example. His first Instagram auction recently landed him $1010 for his first Ranger Elite, a very good start for this young maker.

Here is his most recent Ranger with recurve bowie blade and full Ti handles (with stone finish and bronze anodization):

Let those Ranger photos roll in guys.

Hey Nellem, Thanks for your post brother!
Your comments are much appreciated, and encouraging!
Here are some pics requested of the Elite 1,2 and 3.
Kind regards

So now you are going to think I am picking on you and the maker, but I am not.

That belt finish on BOTH the stainless blades and the damascus blade the maker posted are pretty raspy, specifically the angle and coarseness.

Would like to see some nice hand satin finishes shown to demonstrate both ability and final product.

My .02

STeven Garsson

Thanks STeven. I don't want to talk on behalf of Jason, but I'm not seeing your comment in a negative light. The same has been said to me before and my response is that Jason intentionally makes his blades to look like this. I love the raspy look. When Jason started off he asked a small group of us (beta testers) to vote on the blade finish and the raspy look won. I'm sure Jason can do satin hand finishes but the raspy look is now part of Ranger's character. Rangers are tough.

In art there will always be disruptors who will cause mischief and mayhem ... swimming against the stream. The crazy ones.

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

I for one like the size and weight of these knives

I have not held them but I have held enough knives that I can surmise that

As for the blade finish

I can remember the comments of PH seniors knives

They were sanded out to many at a far from finished state and than buffed which gave a different look

Many hated it and still do

I liked it and still do :)

I love the look of his knives. On his books for a Ranger and Ranger Elite as well as a Mini Cleaver. Sadly I have to wait until next October. Hopefully I can score a flash sale or auction at the end of this month.

I think the look of the blade finish is different than everyone else is doing and looks great. I got on his books emailed back and forth with him and he will be doing other blade finishes. I will assume his finish is harder to do than just through it in some acid then stone wash, which many makers do, and people really like. Keep up the good work!

Had a mini disagreement with Jason about something and we both fired away at each other, and have since made up with eachother. Hes a good guy! I will follow his knives and see how they progress.
