Jell-o Clips

I've snagged a clip a few times. A couple times with a Spyderco Salt of some sort - the broad, long clip seems prone to snag. Bent it back and it was fine. Once with a Spyderco Yojimbo (original). Again, the design of the clip is pretty high-profile and snaggable. Unfortunately, it's also a very poorly designed clip in that it has a hole in the middle of it, opposite a divot on the handle scale. Meant so you could flip it around with your finger and thumb to facilitate some fancy martial art move that we'd never actually use or be able to pull off in a real situation. It also meant that it was extremely easy to bend right at the weak points and can't be bent back right. There's a reason the Yojimbo 2 doesn't use this clip.

I snag pocket clips of my pens all the time, but I carry them in my back pocket. I would imagine that if I carried in my back pocket that the clip would be just as badly prone to snagging.

Thanks for sharing Planterz! Seems like you don’t like Spyderco clips too much, I will have to see if I can find a video of the “original yojimbo” clip you speak of so I can get a good laugh in. I love it when knives have unescessary attachments/implementations. I think this is the main reason why I don’t enjoy about 80% of the microtech line. Glass breakers and all this other crap(even autos) is just not what I look for in a Edc folder.

It happens more times then you think. I do HVAC and crawl around in all kinds of weird places. Thankfully I haven’t lost a knife, but I’ve bent a number of clips on knives. The last one was my Military. Most of the time it’s an easy fix.

As do I Josh.
Crawling around in a crawl space last week working on a well pump. Had to crawl out backwards, got out and noticed my knife was gone. Shit, it was my Advocate. Crawled back in and found it.....clipped to an old phone wire laying on the ground.
Have also experienced the thieving seat belt phenomenon!!

PS.....wouldn’t this thread be more ‘productive’ in WC...... @bhyde ???????

I’m not sure if your story has lead me to believe this pocket clip is awesome or not so great. After all it was CLIPPED to something else! ;)

I think clip catching/bending has to do with the user and the knife's use. It is stupid to think, really stupid, that the reason knife clips catch or bend is because they are poorly designed. It can certainly be a contributing factor, but that isn't the whole story by any means. From the standpoint of being a cubicle/office guy, that might be the case but not for folks that use their knives for a living.

When remodeling an office or house, I often crawl around (literally) in tight spaces, or even crawl under things in my stomach. It is rare, but my knife clip will get caught on something and it is eased out of my pocket without me knowing. Usually as above, when exiting the tight spot. In a tight working area/space, I can walk under one of my extension ladders and catch the knife on a the edge of the ladder, catch the edge of a piece of bracing, etc. Squeezing by a fellow worker in a tight doorway with hands full of material or tools will sometimes cause problems, so will climbing on a roof for repairs if the roof has a lot of "features" that cause me to have to cling to siding/trims/chimneys to keep from falling off. I often have to lay on my side or get in a very cramped position to keep myself wedged a certain way to keep from falling off.

Can't tell you how many times I have opened up a ceiling with a hole just small enough to crawl into, then when climbing in the hole with my feet and legs in at obtuse angles while on top of the ladder, my change and lighter clatter out onto the floor and I have my knife picked out of my pocket.

No kidding. The frame of reference of some people here has gotten to the point of "if it didn't happen to me, you are probably doing something wrong". That attitude seems to apply to a lot of knife topics here these days.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Sadly some people as stated in earlier post simply will not buy a knife solely for this reason. Or they carry slip joints it seems and call it a day

Clips are made to clip on and clip off!

Its not necessarily a bad thing that they can unclip! Just part of their function.

Exactly! IF I remember to do so, when I am working at close quarters I will take my knife off my pocket seen and just drop it in my pocket.

Now.... All I have to do is remember to do that when needed!

I've been lucky - all my pocket clip snags so far have been my flashlight and not my knife. But I've never had a bent clip yet!

Scratches on the other hand....sometimes I wonder about my own spatial awareness and why my wristwatch and pocket clips seem to be magnetically attracted to doorframes....

How long would you say you’ve been carrying knives for? I’ll admit my watch will sometimes kiss door frames as well.

Not only flailing monkey arms! Flailing hips too apparently in my case! :p

I've been carrying a pocket knife for around 8 years and a flashlight for around 7 years. My previous flashlights have been yanked out of my pocket more times than I care to count. My current light is longer and has a much better clip and construction than my previous lights, and although it still snags on things, it has yet to be pulled out of my pocket.

That’s one thing I was honestly on the fence about whether to carry a light or not. I mean..I’ve got a little guy attached to my key chain that’s super nice but I find when I need it most the battery has mysteriously drained itself
Mind throwing me a couple recommendations of a “thin” Edc light? Preferably ..3”?
