Jell-o Clips

She looked at the knife like it was a UFO, then looked at me for an explanation. I just said sorry and reached over the counter and grabbed my knife. That was it.

The look on her face was priceless:D
Darn. It’s funny I’ll be down certain isles with my lady and whatever we need hasn’t been put up yet but I notice the box is on the pallet, I’ll just treat myself with my knife and the employee always looks at me like I just opened the box with a shotgun compared to their little retractable box cutter ;)

I wear Dickies 13" shorts a lot and back pocket carry is really more like hip carry. The back pockets are a bit wider than normal so the knife sits more to the side... plush arm rests on chairs seem to be particularly snaggy in this setup.

As you sit down, if you're not perfectly centered in the chair, pocket clips like to snag the arm rest upholstery. I have one executive chair that's really bad about it.
This is exactly how I snagged my pocket clip on an old Sebenza I had a while back. It kinda catches you by surprise and then all the sudden you realize your clip is bending at a 45-degree angle hanging up on the armrest. That one was an easy fix.

When i was a plumber i carried a folder and fixed blade and it seemed the folder had more problems than my fixed blade hanging off my belt. I did a lot of underground work amd would have so many problems with my knife popping out while replacing a sewer line or water line due to roots or ladders or any number of hazards. Lost two knoves to pits of sewage and could never find them again. Crawling under houses was another danger, but could usually find them after dropping them. Now that i work in a wharehouse i havent had a knofe snag in a couple years. I never thought about everyday situations snagging my blades clip before but now that im thinking about it it doesnt sound too far fetched or like its stupidity or anything. If it can happen, it most likely will. Murphys law is always in full effect.

Plus you’d never ignore perfectly good knife brands due to their clips getting snagged on things more than others would you? I think it silly they turn their noses up at brands like Shiro and other mid tech options solely for this reason. Do you not agree?

I disagree entirely.

If I buy a mid tech, I expect it to be designed well from top to bottom, including the pocket clip.

I'm not paying for a "name," I'm paying for thoughtful design, superior materials, and tight tolerances.

I'm not going to let a maker's design flaw slide because they charge 500 bucks, are "the rage," and "everybody else is doing it."

Exactly the opposite.

Interesting opinion my man, I guess to me..the issue seems to be more of a “user error” type of thing? I’ve owned multiple knives/clip designs and I’d like to think my career keeps me very active and mobile but in the 1.5 years that I’ve started to religiously carry a knife I’ve yet to have my pocket clip “snag” and bend completely in half like some of these guys are talking about.

How about you dude? Has it happened to you?

Member after member in this thread has said that has happened to them.

It hasn't happened to you.

If you want to claim you are using your knife correctly, and all those other members in this thread (and other places) are incapable of using theirs correctly, that is your call.

I wouldn't.

I carry slipjoints.

User error when a sappling pulls a delica out of the overall pocket? You're entitled to your opinion but don't be surprised when people tell you you're wrong.

Living with a pocket knife daily for years increases the chance of a snag. It WILL happen eventually I wager. Certain people who don't do certain activities are less likely to have a snag. Others are more likely.

Not rocket science.

This thread is dumb.

seat belts. knife or light goes clattering to the ground as I get out or goes down the dreaded abyss of the space between the seat and the center console!!!! and of course it lands right in the track/rail of the seat. Im that guy who looks like he is having a seizure in his car in the parking lot as I try and squeeze my fat hand down a 1" wide space and can feel the knife with just the tips of two fingers.

It happens more times then you think. I do HVAC and crawl around in all kinds of weird places. Thankfully I haven’t lost a knife, but I’ve bent a number of clips on knives. The last one was my Military. Most of the time it’s an easy fix.

These thing was designed to snag stuff. I've torn more belt loops off my pants than I can count on these damn things. I'm sure they claimed some pocket clips as well.

I know what you mean but I will say ones that are sized right for the frame this happens so much less 90% of the time I have snagged one of these it was over sized so it stuck out more.

I don't snag mine as much now that I carry in my left back pocket mostly now if it catches something it is usually a worn hole in my jacket. I would often sit in a chair with arms and catch it when it was clipped in my front left pocket. I of course have had no issues bending anything back into the appropriate shape.

No argument there, I hope y’all dont mind WHEN it does happen to me, I’ll be sure to resurrect this post with pictures. Until then from what it sounds like..I’ve been very fortunate to not snag anything.

Yeah it’s funny, I find HVAC guys to be more opt to be into knives than fellow electricians. I’d like to say you and I have roughly about the same amount of “cutting task” being presented to us on a day to day basis but..sadly I just know very very few sparkies that enjoy knives like me..

Interesting. See, before, you said that when it happened to all the members who it did, that is was "user error." Their fault. Improper use, as it were. And it didn't, of course, ever happen to you.

Now it's just "luck/bad luck."

What changed? o_O How did they all go from clumsy users to just having something happen that is quite common?

Clips can snag. Good ones don't. A midtech should be good.

I can excuse a badly designed clip on an inexpensive knife. I cannot on an expensive knife.

Take a look at the first photo I posted it’s of the owner bending his Shiro clip. Is it his fault or bad design on Shiros end? Personally I’ve had no problems with my Hati, I’d say that’s carelessness on his part. Would you agree?
Just trying to get a feel as to where you stand on this lovely debate :D

So...what’s the most expensive knife you own that you’ve had this happen to? Or are you saying you never make poor choices when choosing a knife and everyone who’s had this happen to “said knife” made a poor choice in their mid tech due to the clip being able to snag/bend during day to day regimens
