Jerry Halfrich Knives...

I have Deloro sending me a chunk of Stellite 6K.I think I will send it to Jerry just to drive him crazy.Wonder how long it will take him to hand rub it??

He'd probably enjoy working with it. I have a folder in Stellite 6K from Kit Carson and several other knives in Talonite by Rob Simonich (and one by Camillus).

Here is an order Jerry did for me early last year. His 4 1/8th-inch HTT pattern in some nice stag. I really love this folder. And, it is Double-Halfrich-Sharp! It has a heavy pull and I let it fly into the backspring right out of the box (learned my lesson fast!). Anyway, having used lightly only, I took it with me to the A.G. Russell Show last summer, and had to share with Jerry how much I liked his folder. He noticed the slight mark on the inside of the backspring and insisted on taking it with him back to Texas to resharpen the blade (I had received the knife the 1st of April). So, I eneded up with a Double-Halfrich-Sharp HTT that needs full attention when opening and closing! And, I couldn't be happier.

Really enjoying this thread, Blues. A big fan of Jerry's work here.

Blues what do you think of the 6K?The next knife Jerry is making for me (hint hint Jerry) is a Bose shadow trapper and I was thinking of using the 6K.I would think it would make one hell of a daily carry and small game skinner. How is the 6K to sharpen?

Thanks, Joe, appreciate the words and your sharing that story.

Jerry's just a little bit obsessive. ;) I've seen him do exactly what you just related at the Blade Show when he thought a knife might be touched up to be just a tad better than the condition the buyer found it in.

The first knife I posted (the one Jerry carried and used for game processing) has a super sharp edge but I could just feel a slight blip on the edge. Sure enough, I checked the inside of the backspring and had to laugh...there was the telltale mark. I bet somebody let that sucker slam shut or pressed the spine down while the blade was closed. (This one has a stout spring, but like you, that's how I often like 'em.)

Hey Blues, you do realize what this thread is going to do to our wait times don't you?I think I will call tomorrow and place a couple more orders.

It sharpens easily because the matrix is relatively soft...it's the carbides along the edge that are super hard. So it can be easily brought back to sharp. It will still cut pretty cleanly even when it feels a bit dull to the touch but due to the lower overall Rockwell, it won't hold a razor edge as long as a more fully hardened blade.

As to the wait...well, it's hard to begrudge our friends success. But, it sounds like you have a good idea. ;)

Blues what kind of edge does it take?I have some S60V from Jerry that takes a very keen edge.I have some cpm154 from Jerry that takes a hell of a toothy edge.I think I like the very aggressive toothy edge the best. What would the 6K be like?

It'll take a pretty keen edge and feel smooth when you run it on your nail. (Of course you can finish it on a coarser hone for more "tooth".)

One thing I noticed is that when you slice something like magazine paper with it it feels almost liquid as it glides through.

Anyway, let's chat about this via email or PM so we don't sidetrack our continuing discussion of Halfrich knives. ;)

Here's one that Jerry doesn't know I'm taking the liberty of sharing this morning...It's a prototype he just built and will test this weekend at his hunting camp.

Jerry's description:

By the way, here is a photo of a new model. It's called The Ultralight Woodsman. It has a 12C 27 blade that I intend to field test. Hope it works out. It's really a nice working steel and takes an unbelievable edge. The handle is made out of a mixture of G10 and carbon fiber. It's in layers. The knife handle measures 4 3/8". The overall length is 8". It weighs 2 1/2 oz. Not bad for a knife that big. I'll let you know how it works out.

Personally, I like it a lot though for EDC I'd prefer to see that model in the 3.75" to 4" range. I think this is the first or one of the first times that Jerry will be experimenting with 12C27. I sent him an email earlier to ask how hard it tested out on the Rockwell scale.

Edited To Add:

Just got a call back from Jerry.

Rockwell is 60. (And this is the first knife blade Jerry has made from the steel.)

A while before Jerry started getting some press around here I was talking to Paul Long. Paul told me that there was a guy in San Marcos that was doing some good stuff and was going to be someone to watch. So I got my name on Jerry's list and when my name came up I asked him to make me one like the one he made for Paul. Smooth bone. Whenever Jerry's name is mention you usually hear the word sharp also mentioned. Sure enough I had this one about two minutes before it bit me.:D

You've been holding out on us, Chuck! ;)

Thanks To Blues I was forced to put in some new orders with Jerry.I told him to put me down for a new knife every 1 1/2 years until one of us dies.

Not sure if that makes us best friends or sworn enemies...;):p

It's really gratifying to read all the comments. It gives me a real perspective of the interest that exists on the BF for my knives. I want to say "Thanks" for the kind words and encouragement. It makes a knifemaker want to get back out to the shop and really stay busy. Although I think I do that pretty much anyhow.

Jerry,
I know you are no doubt busy enough as it is, but personally, I would LOVE to see more of your folders here on the forum, especially in the "for sale" section. That "Rounder" you posted a few days ago, as well as many in this thread, really have my attention. :)
