John DF's January Slip GAW

Firstly, Happy New Year to you all.
Wow JohnDF JohnDF , two fantastic prizes there. It has been great to watch these giveaways throughout the year and the enthusiasm they generate. A nice way to celebrate the Porch and its members.

Harry, thank you Sir, a true gent. I would be very proud indeed to own such a magnificent knife as this. I think seeing one of Eric's knives in Scotland would be akin to spotting the Loch Ness monster😁
That slip aint half bad either:thumbsup:

Just to give you all a wee taste of Bonnie Scotland, here are some pics from a visit to a local distillery yesterday. It was my birthday and my son had gifted me a tour of the distillery. As it was still an official holiday there was no actual production taking place but we did finish the tour off with a few samples. I would highly recommend the Glengoyne 18 and 21 year old expressions - glorious!

Cheers my friends and I'm entering Johns fab ga on behalf of Jack Black Jack Black ...the intrepid explorer of Yerkshires most netherest regions in search of the Wizards Quest knife...one that I will always treasure. Thanks mate.
Cheers.
Great pic Jon! :D Thanks mate :)

Mangled beyond recognition, but here's a link (with more links) for our newer members ;)

Edit - I've now realised that those links no longer work, you can find the links here
Ok, I have stopped myself from entering many giveaway's because I am extremely fortunate enough to have amazing Knife friends, and I am fortunate enough to have been gifted some stunning Knives over the years, so I cant hold my hand out for more ......... BUT.....

John could I enter please, I am in New Zealand, and we are lucky to be living here- its just so so far away from any knife life and my Knife friends.

Its exactly one year ago today where our Sweet Izzy left us, January the 5th 2021, she was my lovely wee girl so I thought I would post a picture of here with a little of NZ behind Izzy and myself. Its still very hard to not have her around, so I hope you enjoy seeing her face- she was always so happy outside going on a Bush walk with her Dad.

John if I am lucky enough to win, can I please suggest Meako to be the Recipient of the Prize, He is just a cool kinda Cat, he went through a pretty darned hard time some time ago where I am sure he lost a lot of his great Hobby Cutlery as well as most probably a ton of Happiness, so to see him receive this would really make me smile.

In Meako's Post above its good to see him all dressed up- That's Suit and Tie stuff for an Aussie folks!

Even though he is Australian- we can forgive him for that :)

Many Thanks and Happy New Year to all.

Very sad Duncan, that's a wonderful photo my friend :)
Appreciate it, friend :)

Now I guess I owe some pictures. I may be a bit biased, but think I live in one of the more beautiful places in the world. My wife and I love hiking, and we've got some pretty awesome scenery within an hour or two drive from home. I only believe in 3 seasons (Spring through Fall) and prefer to hibernate in the winter, but my wife Christina enjoys the dreaded white stuff.

Born, raised, and still live in Calgary, Alberta. Home of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, the Calgary Stampede. For 10 days every Summer we host the world for a parade, midway, concerts, and one of if not the world's richest tournament style rodeo (figured John would love that part!). We even got a shoutout on Yellowstone this season for being so nice ;)

Dan.

Not an entry since I'm a yankee and already have been a recipient of you're generosity, John. Fantastic prize package you've assembled my friend, it is gonna be fun to see who the lucky winner is. Your hand crafted leather work is exceptional. I use my JohnDF knife slip almost daily and will continue to for years to come.
Here's a pic of the wonderful slip and Barlow that John gifted to me, going in my pocket for wooden Wednesday today.:thumbsup:

Thank you Dan !!!
Your kind comments made my day 👍

Last summer boat adventures hold a very special place in my heart.
I needed them to help me reflect on life's journey overall, deal with feelings of self doubt, connect with the past and contemplate the future.
I needed the solitude ... however it's hard to be completely alone so sharing them here on the Porch was comforting.

Cheers :)

Really, how are the All Blacks going.o_Oo_Oo_O:rolleyes:😘
Cudgee, mate, only a true blue one eyed ocker legend understands that whilst the ...NZ rugby team uurr the All Blacks is it? are ahead on the
scoreboard ...it doesnt make them better than us...they have the unfair advantage of rugby as their national religion..anyway the poms beat them in 2003 and we're flogging the poms in the ashes...so we must be better🤥🤫

Very generous GAW John. Great to make it for those of the Porch outside our borders.
I would like to nominate Magizm7 Magizm7 since he has a better chance winning this than spotting that old Loch Ness.
Thanks Tim, much appreciated🦕

Meako,
Be serious. The Welsh have the best rugby team. They don't win every game, they always are stylish. Aussies and Kiwis make the rugby look like a job, efficient and boring.

Dan.

Thank you for the generous offer.

I live in the middle of England though I was born in the deep south (that's only 50 miles away on this small island) 😁

Since leaving hospital after my last major operation I decided to see as much of the country (and surrounding cousins as I regard those that border England) as I could.

I wrote a list of places I haven't been and take it as it comes.

I have learnt loads,I have a love of history now,its all around me I dont have to go far to find it.

It seems everything In England has a reason for being there connected in someway to the past.

In the summer travelling around on my motorbike I stop and pay my respects at all the little village war memorials.

If I see a road I haven been down I follow it to see what's down there.

If I see doorway/gate in my town I go through and have a look, you get the idea.

Animals and all sorts of humanity seems to cross my path wherever I go 😆

Last year for example I went to Shropshire and bumped into a old WW2 veteran called the D day dodger (a self deprecating title for his book as he joined at 15 and dodged nothing).

It was my privilege to take him for a cup of tea,.

When I got home I phoned his council to fix the path and trim the vegetation so he could get his mobility scooter along the path near his house.

I am glad I haven't seen it all it means there are still places for me to discover.

Cornish lifeguard at the height of an English summer.

Johnnythefox Johnnythefox Very fine collection of pictures, lot of atmosphere and things to think on.

Reminds me of a poem by Thomas Hardy that I enjoy at this bleak time of year (or life..) where the beauty of Nature, birdsong, triumphs .

The Darkling Thrush

BY THOMAS HARDY
I leant upon a coppice gate
When Frost was spectre-grey,
And Winter's dregs made desolate
The weakening eye of day.
The tangled bine-stems scored the sky
Like strings of broken lyres,
And all mankind that haunted nigh
Had sought their household fires.

The land's sharp features seemed to be
The Century's corpse outleant,
His crypt the cloudy canopy,
The wind his death-lament.
The ancient pulse of germ and birth
Was shrunken hard and dry,
And every spirit upon earth
Seemed fervourless as I.

At once a voice arose among
The bleak twigs overhead
In a full-hearted evensong
Of joy illimited;
An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small,
In blast-beruffled plume,
Had chosen thus to fling his soul
Upon the growing gloom.

So little cause for carolings
Of such ecstatic sound
Was written on terrestrial things
Afar or nigh around,
That I could think there trembled through
His happy good-night air
Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew
And I was unaware.
