All are winners no matter how this turns out. I have to pick one Sam's Musso. Just something about that knife just says all bowie to me.

Roger thanks for doing this again

They are all fantastic and for me it was a choice between Dave Lisch and Sam Lurquin. In the end Dave got my vote because I am a sucker for a great stag handle and I also love the Flying Dragons steel and the split ring ball guard!!

Damn hard choice. They all deserve to win!

Voted for Karl's bowie. Again, that profile, the seamless hot blued damascus, the handle & guard sculpting (and leaving the handle just a bit proud of the guard), that deep BLACK (hot blued) guard, and the rich warm tones and patterns in that cross-hatched walnut all make it so beautiful. But it's also the "simple" cleanness that the take-down construction provides, as well as knowing how close the tolerances are that make his guards produce that ever so satisfying "pop" when taking it down.

I could say just as much about all of the finalists, but there can only be one, right? ;)

Another great thread this year, Roger!

Best of luck to all the finalists, and a big thank you for the votes and comments in the previous thread!

These knives are all amazing. I didn't vote in the first round, as I got sidetracked, but four of the five knives are knives I planned to vote for. In the end I voted for the Lurquin Musso. This is not a style of knife that usually appeals to me, but man this one knocks it out of the park. To get me to want to make one myself now was what pushed this one to the top of the list for me. Other than that, it would have been a series of coin tosses to get me to choose between these knives.

All the knives are wonderful. I have a couple of Karl's knives and was so tempted to make his my choice because it is the best knife I have ever seen him produce and offer a big huge amount of congratulations to him. I agree with the post that JF's Bowie is the a design I like to see in a Bowie. Sam's piece is truly wonderful and would be something of his I would love to own. However, I own a nice Bowie/Fighter from David and the knife presented here with the total package of handle material, wonderful pattern of Damascus and intriguing guard just made the final selection the one I will be going to the top and voting for. It is quite a spectacular work of art! Congrats on the effort Dave.

Karl's knife is just magnificent. Great proportions and exquisite combination of materials. They compliment each other and enhance the whole knife so well. This is probably the finest bowie I have seen from Karl. The guards are not my favorite parts of Karl's knives. But boy, that is a beautiful knife.

Russ's knife has such nice flow and that blade is so three dimensional. I don't go gaga over ivory the way some people do though.

Jerry's bowie is a beast. Great size and proportions but I'm not a big embellishment guy. I would have liked it more without the gold inlay.

Dave's knife is stunning of course and a masterful exercise but not my particular cup 'o tea.

My vote went to the knife that kicked me in the gut and filled me with bowei lust. The Musso bowie is the one for me. Sam has an incredible eye for line and form and just how far to go with details. Like I said in the nominating round, I don't love everything Sam does. But when he gets it right he really knocks it out of the park. This one went over the fence and is still going. The length to width proportions, the long subtle curve to the edge and matching drop in the handle, the guard in perfect visual weight for the size of the knife; all work together in harmony. The details are like a beautiful piece of music. There is a masterful balance of interest as well as rests for the eye. The damascus spacer, guard and spine along with that attactive hamon are a playground for the eyes while the calm of the handle and the edges give you a chance to really appreciate the elegant profile of the whole. But the other knives have beautiful details as well. For me, what puts it on top is just my gut reaction. It's so big and imposing yet so beautiful in the carefully selected line and detail.

What a lineup just beautiful. I chose Dave Lisch myself for a safe queen, but as an old timely user I'd say Sam Lurquin. It's just hard to pick a winner when they are all winners at this point of their Craftsmanship and Skill Level.

I don't see how I can choose one over another. They are all exceptional.
But I fancy Russ Andrews knife for it's understated elegance and useful ambiance.

4. Dave Lisch

Not a fan of the guard, but the whole knife is so well done and has so many great elements.

Thanks again, all, for your votes and thoughtful comments.

Congrats to all the makers whose work was nominated and particularly to the five finalists from a VERY strong field of nominees.

I am pleased to announce the winner of the John White Memorial 2015 Best Bowie Award: Sam Lurquin! This was indeed a tour-de-force piece that clearly resonated with a broad cross-section of makers and collectors alike. Bavo Sam!

I am also tickled that sharing in the celebration is a fellow who does SO MUCH to positively promote custom knives from the standpoint of both collectability and usability: Joe Paranee. Happy for you my friend!

Happy 2016 to all!

Roger
