JohnDF's Return to Work GAW

Still not an entry, but I wanted to revisit this Star Trek issue before the thread ended. ;)

I don't really put as much emphasis on the characters as some of you apparently do in evaluating Star Trek series. The reason DS9 stand out for me is the stories. I was totally captivated by the season-long (or longer) story arcs that were standard in DS9, in contrast to the mostly one-shot, almost totally independent episodes that made up TOS and TNG.

I agree that Spock, Picard, and Data were all fine characters (I always found Kirk one-dimensional and annoying), but I thought there were several fascinating characters in DS9 who were more complex and had more depth and character development than those in earlier series. FWIW, even the Ferengi, who I think were only intended as comic relief, eventually developed important, complex roles. And that Cardassian tailor shown in @kamagong's post is one of the most intriguing TV characters EVER, IMHO!
Nothing after the 1966-1969 Star Trek even matters. It's just Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. In that order. Even as obnoxious as Shatner may be, the original Star Trek is SO far superior to any so-called sequals, .....

I never watched DS9 so I can’t compare. I thought the stories were better in Next Generation than the original

I know that I am kind of all on my own when it comes to Star Trek rankings. My order would be TOS > Voyager > DS9 > TNG > Enterprise > Orville > Discovery.

My mom is a hardcore Trekker, so I grew up with all 79 original Star Trek episodes on VHS as a kid, so TOS is always going to be number 1 for me. I like Voyager so much because I loved Captain Janeway and I liked that Voyager recaptured that kind of frontier-out-on-their-own-with-a-ship-that-isn't-enough-to-provide-all-the-answers-exploration feel of TOS. I actually didn't like DS9 when it originally aired since I wasn't watching TV regularly at the time, and DS9 is terrible as episodic television. When I went back and rewatched the entire series on Netflix (I stayed home and took care of my daughter the first year, I watched all of the Star Trek series consecutively) I realized that DS9 was really good, and if it weren't for my sentimental attachments to TOS and Voyager, it might actually be the top for me. I do love TNG, but I always felt like the answers came to easy because of the power of their ship and the strength of the Federation, there was no sense of Kirk having to emote a computer to death, and I always liked that kind of thing. The Enterprise bugged me, but it had its moments. The Orville is obviously not really Star Trek, but it feels a lot more like Trek than Discovery. I would enjoy Discovery a lot more if it was not calling itself Star Trek (actually, I probably wouldn't watch it then if we are being honest ;) ). But I still have hopes for Discovery. The Number One character has been waiting for her moment to shine since the studio executives demanded she be eliminated after the original pilot. She is actually the original "logical first officer science officer" character, Spock was supposed to be fiery. I just hope that they start writing stories where the characters make choices that are consistent with their characters, and the plots are less gritty and twisty for grittiness and twistiness sake, and more designed to follow some kind of rational thread.

Sorry for my long fanboy rant, back to knives.View media item 3280

How fun was that? I had a blast talking about Sci-Fi and looking at all your entries. The judges and I poured over all the entries and we came up with our list of finalists. There were so many good ones that it was a difficult job. In total there are 12 finalists (nice easy number). One was a guaranteed entry for winning the little mini contest, 5 were our agreed upon favorites (made every judges list), and 6 were randomly generated from the large list of all the individual judges favorites. You had to impress at least one judge to make the big list and be considered, the list was looooong. Good luck to all the finalists

I know this is a day earlier than posted, but I'm anxious to get this knife shipped off to the winner. Besides, the entries have slowed down considerably. I'm sure nobody will object :)

Here is the list...

I see now that I should have anticipated that it would be a “miss.” :D
Lol. I get it!!!
I'm not at liberty to divulge any of the judges score cards, but rest assured that most made at least one of the judge's lists. In order to make the top 5 you had to be one of the top 10 finalists on EVERY judge's card. The rest was random draw.
