A truly wonderful gift to Traditionals, Jeff! I look forward to the smile on our friends face. I will also enjoy the process pictures:D

I have had a tough time finding time to get started on this. After speaking with Ron, we are going to be doing an all steel construction, which means I need to get my hands on steel pins. This weekend I will disassemble the knife and do any cleaning necessary. I can triple check the pin diameter I need and get those ordered. I can still work on the bolster soldering while those come in the mail. As I said, progress pics will go here!

Okay I broke the ice on this project this weekend. For starters, lets take a look at the starting point once more:

The first step is to dremel off the ends of the rivets so that they can be pushed through:

A punch and a hammer later, and disassembled!

The clamshell design has these grooves pushed into the liners to accept the clamshell outer covers. We need to flatten those out:

After flattening on an anvil

Next I take some 0000 steel wool and some WD-40 to eliminate any surface corrosion and clean everything up:

I measure the pins and ordered some correct stainless pin stock. I will also need to order bolster steel, as the steel I was going to use is hardened and going to kill my saw blades. I was able to pick two mammoth covers from what I have. I am glad no one wanting a mammoth scout won, because the pieces I have are mostly too small even for the barlow, or they are larger with cracks in them. I think these two will work and will be somewhat matched in color.

Now we wait for the pins and the bolster materials to come in!

Well done Jeff and Congrats Ron.
I can't wait to see this complete.
cheers

I'm enjoying the pictures, and describing the process, a great learning experience
