JS Testing

Those knives look great. I love the wood on the bottom two. Are they curly maple? What did you stain them with?

Grapevine,
The bottom two two knives as well as the second from the left are curly maple from the same wood guy "Nicholas" from Pennsylvania. They are all stabilized maples. I don't use any stain, the stain is added during the stabilizing process. I too love the bottom two woods. I almost wish I had not sold them. I did however buy more wood just like it from Nick.

I wish I would have caught this thread from the begining! What a ride!

Congratulations, Mike. I appreciate your humble attitude and willingness to share with us. Not only have you become a better maker but you have undoubtedly inspired others in the process. You have shown that setting aside ego and making yourself vulnerable critisism can open the floodgates to learning. Kudos!

ETA: I know that my JS knives will look nothing like the knives I make now. The ABS test is not a time to get creative. They are not judging the knives, they are judging your skill. You have to present your skill in a clean, concise manner. SIMPLE SIMPLE SIMPLE. The less time you knife spends in a MS's hands, the better. There is nothing worse than presenting a knife that demands a judgement call.

Great looking JS knives. As some of the others have said already that bowie is exceptionally nice. Contratulations Michael.

This means a lot coming from you. Thanks Roger.

Thanks Rick! The knives I normally make, like you, are quite different from my JS knives. You're right, its all about demonstrating your skill. The journey in making these knives has really helped me to grow as a maker. The funny thing is that now I feel like I have even more to learn. This JS just seems like I at least have a foundation from where I start.

I would love to see some pics of your knives.

Thank you Bruce. I wish I could have spent more time with your friend Dana. I loved his knives and he seems like a really great guy too.
