July 14, 2022 botm 119 full flat grind

Oh, I'm not complaining, too much.
I know there are folks that have it worse off.
I'm fortunate enough to be healthy and have the means to do it and make it to work.
But it has put a damper on the ole knife budget.

And there's no charging outlet for your electric car on a building under construction ☺️.
Yeah it does put a damper on the knife budget!

Seeing the pictures of this one make me want a full flat grind 119 drop point. It would be sort of Kephart-ish. At least as far as the blade goes.

Alas put me in the “Fully Dampered knife budget club”. With B brianv and GPyro GPyro Just got my insurance bills. Not going to be cheap to heat the house this winter. Food bill has doubled. Cant catch a break.

I’m not complaining either.

So will they yank these or let them sit till they sell? A discount would piss off about 500 of their customers. Yanking them would make the existing more valuable as a collectors piece, but they would probably drop the remaing knives 50 at a time as web specials.

they haven't in the past yanked them off. they just sit until sold...eventually moved to maybe collection limited section on the website as well......think they did that with the vantage fixed blade that sat a very long time.

Finally starting to sell those "extra" 250. 246 left, last day of July. These might still be available in Sept. at this rate.
I'm a bit surprised these are taking longer to move than the R2D2 Budgie I bought in May. There were around 180ish left this morning. Anyone know the BOTM that sat for the longest? Pretty soon, we'll need to start a September BOTM thread.

I believe this is the longest sitting botm. Not sure why.

I finally gave in a bought one..
Honestly its nice but not worth the money..$214, imo, anyway. I am picky…I admit it…
there was a little indent flaw, on the micarter handle,
a tiny unbuffed spot on the blade and a tiny flaw on top of blade, notice the indent on right side, For that money should have been flawless. I think this should have been rated an FB, factory Blem.

Was thinking of sending back, but probably will keep it, whose to say I would get a better one, may be worse, but overall not wowed with its quality. its a $125 -150 knife tops. With all the knives they had left I had get this one flawed one shipped to me, rats.

On the upside, I did get the free RED Buck Logo hat…!
I like the hat better than the knife, ha!

Bummer. I'd probably just keep it. Last year, I got a 301 BOTM that was pretty great, but not perfect. I was planning to send an old 112 in for spa service, so I included my new BOTM. They sent back a new knife without the original issues, but new, cosmetic flaws. It's one of my favorite slippies, but I should have kept it in my pocket instead of sending it to ID.

178 left.... Buck's pricing is going to ensure that this one will be around a long time, especially if you're a BCCI member, and can get the 119 Pro for substantially less money.

Did I buy one? Yes... but only because I wanted it to pair with the 119 flat grind black phenolic I bought from C&C. Otherwise, even though I'm a bonafide 119-aholic, I would have taken a pass on it.

That is why I bought it, I have the black phenolic flat grind as well.

Between the thinner blade stock and the .55oz lighter weight than the 119 Pro, the July BOTM seems like it would have less strength than the 119 Pro. I was expecting the full flat grind to have MORE blade material than the 119’s standard hollow grind.
But shoot, I just can’t help myself. I’m putting in my order now while they’re sill available and hoping that, with the thinner blade stock, it may fit in my kydex sheath made for the standard 119.

Alright. Just pulled the trigger. I was turned off by the red micarta when I first saw it in July, but it’s starting to grow on me. It almost looks like a light cocabolo wood.
How are you guys liking yours so far?

Put yours through any hard tasks yet?

I will try to get through a deer pelvis this year like one of you mentioned before because I have been wanting to try to do it without a saw. That would make one less thing I would have to carry in the field when hunting

"Butt Out 2" field processing tool.

No need to cut thru the pelvis in the field. And the little light weight plastic tool packs easily.
You can cut pelvis later after you've gotten animal out of the field.

You need some string of sorts, but I always carry some small paracord anyways.

I believe 420hc is tougher than s35v.... And if 420hc can get a rolled edge on a deer pelvis.....
I don't believe any knife is really made for that task.

I've just tried to get away from cutting them in the field.
Update us please if it works.

But your results may vary.🤠
Thanks.

What GPyro GPyro said. No need to split the pelvis. Haven't done that in a couple of decades myself. I used a 619 the last time and it suffered no damage. Pulling and tying saves time, effort, mess, and meat.

I will look more into the Butt Out 2. I had always seen the original Butt Out and was discouraged by butt poking aspect of it for some reason haha. Does that also help in removal of the urethra as well?

I think I overestimated the toughness of s35vn, I was under the understanding that it was tougher than 440hc for tasks like batoning (not planning on it with this new 119). Is s35vn still a bit brittle, akin to its predecessor s30v?

I think it will make a good food prep knife on the go. I eat dinner with my in laws a lot, so I always jump in the kitchen to help with food prep when I get there. The handguard on my 119 440HC gets in the way of cutting board slicing a bit, but I just move my cutting board all the way over to the edge of the counter so the handguard can move lower and allow for a flat slice

Did you mean 440C or 420HC?

In his toughness chart, in this article by Larrin, 420HC comes in at 40 ft-lbs, S35VN about 8ft-lbs, and S30V about 6ft-lbs. In this article Larrin rates 420HC as having a toughness of 9, edge retention of 2.5 and corrosion resistance of 8. 440C as having toughness of 3.5, edge retention of 4.5 and corrosion resistance of 7.5. S35VN as having toughness of 5, edge retention of 5 and corrosion resistance of 7.5. S30V as having toughness of 4, edge retention of 6 and corrosion resistance of 7.5.

O.B.

Oops I did mean to say 420HC, Buck’s run of the mill steel. Thank you for all of the awesome info. I am really blown away by the toughness of 420hc, I just wish the edge retention was much better. I also thought that s30v would be inferior in edge retention to s35v!
