June 2023 Buck Of The Month BOTM - The 55 - Ironwood, 154 CM, Pewter Medallion

This one has just about perfect fit and finish, good grinds, and the ironwood is beautiful. Back spring is perfectly flush open and closed, and the blade is perfectly centered. There are a couple really small gaps that are only noticeable if you hold it up to the light, definitely not an issue for me. Lock up is rock solid in all directions. Although I'll admit being hesitant with the price tag, I love this little knife and I'm happy I bought it.

If mine is half as nice I will be very happy.

Well mine must have taken the redeye, it says out for delivery today.
Ditto.

Edit:
No photos yet, but this is an awesome knife. I love the size of the 55, and this particular example is well finished. It may be the smoothest to open and close of my (very) small 55 collection.

I received mine today. One thing I don't like is that counterbore hole made for the shield has frayed wood around it. Is this something that I should accept? You know, natural materials and what have you.

The close-up picture makes it look worse than it does with my old eyes. But there is no question that the wood is splintered a little around the shield area.

Edit: I sent an email to Buck to see what can be done. I'd like to have one but I'm not happy with this one. The other people who have posted pictures don't seem to have this issue.

It doesn't hurt anything to email them about it, especially if you're unhappy. I'm curious what they'll say.

Actually, I complained about it on the BCCI Facebook page and apparently there is someone from Buck that monitors that page. So he is having a return material label sent and says that the Custom Shop will fix it. I suppose it'll take a long time but I am not in a hurry (at least I don't think I am. Should I be, God?). I'll post the results when they come.

Does anyone know if there is a finish on the ironwood for this knife? Because of its density, ironwood can be sanded and polished to a high degree without any finish.

It appears to me to have a clear gloss finish. But I can't rule out it being a high polish.

O.B.

They are beautifully finished, I put a coat of Renwax on mine to try and protect it.

I am missing something. If you are talking about this months 55 BOTM, the handles are ironwood, not red micarta.

Bert
Sorry. I was talking about one from awhile back. The 55 with red micarta. I saw you had it and was wondering what you thought of it. Saw somebody had for sale so was just looking for some feedback. Sorry for the confusion

The red micarta 55 is a nice one. I like the way micarta wears as you use it. Incredibly sharp too. Mine bit me. That's why I passed on this one.
