June 2023 Buck Of The Month BOTM - The 55 - Ironwood, 154 CM, Pewter Medallion

Looks like I just missed out. I was on a daytrip visiting family. Saw the email on my phone, but decided family first and waited until I got home. Probably for the best as my CC has some big charges on it already this month. Beautiful knife! Congratulations to those who grabbed one!

I actually thought it would take 2 or 3 days to sellout at that price..After tax it was at least $160.00 and that does seem high for the knife. But many things now give me Sticker Shock. Old trucks I remember selling for $2,500.00 are now $15,000.00 and many old cars now go for 5 times as much as I remember just a few short years ago. It IS 2023..
Edit: Wages have NOT gone up near as much as prices have increased. Rent in many places is so high, even in Florida, young folks move back in with Ma and Pa..

I'm interested in seeing how this one does for the resellers. 500 were made and it sold out in a short time, even at the high price.
It was painful enough paying $150. I just can't see people paying much more than that, unless there is someone who collects 55s and missed out. I don't think there are that many of those people.

I already have an Ironwood 55, true it dose not have a 154 blade or the medallion. However, maybe I would have paid $100, I sure wasn't paying $150 for a fingernail cleaner. But, that's just me they sure did sell out. I would like to see how many were bought by folks, did they all get bought up by resellers?

Now that is funny, thanks John! Where did you find your ironwood 55?

There have been four BOTM 'The 55'
2019 April | The 55 | S30V, black Micarta handle with nickel silver bolsters | 149 available | $115
2020 February | The 55 | S30V, granadillo wood with nickel silver bolsters | 180 available | $115
2022 January | The 55 | S35VN, red canvas Micarta inlays, satin finished nickel silver frame with hidden rivets | 500 available | $125
2023 June | The 55 | 154CM clip point, ironwood inlay handle with polished nickel silver bolsters and pewter medallion | 500 available | $149.99

some I liked some weren't enough to get me to buy. what would ya like to see offered, out of curiosity?

my issues are mostly with pricing, Like you, I do like the designs but nothing is compelling me to pull the trigger for the asking prices. One thing that bugs me with Buck is how they include imported sheaths; why can they not include a USA manufactured sheath for what they charge?

Phrased another way, if these BOM knives were 20-30% less they would be more appealing to me.

I think its to the point where it is about price point. These sold out quick. Good for Buck. I think its due to Buck and collecting, gaining a little popularity during the covid mess. For people who have been collecting a long time, I'm sure no one is happy about the price increases. I think newer collectors are more apt to spend the money.

For $150 I want a 4" blade. Dont really care what its made out of. Their 420 is pretty damn good. The 154 is great too.

Maybe I would have sprung if it was blue micarta to contrast the 55 BOTM from last year (year before?) I find the pewter stamp on a knife that small to be god awful. Sorry. I know its historic and some people specifically collect them.

Prices are up and are going to stay up for a bit (forever). I'm buying things I really like. Not just something that says BOTM and is limited. I collect Spitfires, and I am so bumbed about the March offering. Super unimpressed when I got it and I doubt I'll ever be able to sell it for what I paid. April was very cool, but I passed and ordered a custom elk 113 in 420, that is beautiful, and may have cost less (cant remember, but pretty sure).

I missed January, and wish I hadn't. Cool steel and a simple elegant look. Unable to make it in the custom shop. the solid DP 112 was awesome, priced well and sold fast. c3p0 knife is pretty cool too, for what it is.
I would love a compadre done with some nice wood and inlays. scandi grind 5160 would be cool. No Ckote
Any Spitfire is cool, but needs to be at least g10, preferably micarta. a good steel is more important than its looks. mirror polish.

anyway... thats way more than 2 cents worth...

It did sell out quite quickly. I'm fortunate it did. I had thought about getting this one, but delayed long enough I didn't have to. My new 117 Brahma plus a regular 112 just shipped today anyway. So, I should probably wait at least a few days before ordering again. 😂 Besides, now that I can think more clearly about it, I'm probably better served by getting all three of the regular 55, 501, and 503 instead. That will add to my Buck collection a little quicker and I would like to have the regular ones of those. Once I play with the regular ones a bit, I can decide which 'special' ones I should get.
