Just a Walk in the Snark

Nice score Murph. That old drill press is pretty cool.

Anyone here that has had Lasik surgery done? I'm seriously considering getting my right eye done and maybe my left. Guess I'm getting tired of broken glasses and contacts that don't get my right eye anywhere near clear.

My wife and I had ours done about a year ago. My eye sight wasn't too bad (-3.25ish, slight astigmatism), but my wife's were in the 1k range. Without her contacts or glasses, she was legally blind. Now we have nearly perfect vision. I might still have very slight astigmatism, where I have to concentrate to focus at certain distances, and I am covered to go back in and have my eyes redone (lifetime warranty!).

Took about a week of "recovery", which meant no water/ sweat in the eyes,, no rubbing of eyes. Had to wear an eye mask at night. After that, I was cleared to go about as I wanted. My eyes were red from bruising for about 2-3 weeks, which was normal.

Do it, it's a life changer. I used to wake up in the middle of the night to use the restroom and think "Crap, I can see perfectly, I left my contacts on...! Waitaminute...."

Very, very liberating, and I only had mild-moderate nearsightedness!

I got my Numyth fire piston in today. Freakin' awesome doesn't even come close.

I've tried and tried to be proficient with these things, string gaskets, rubber gaskets, homemade, natural, even one's I've bought.

This one worked first time, right off the bat and the subsequent 3 more tries, were all just as they were supposed to be. Even has a container in the end that holds char cloth.

Me and willis is gonna have to go on a tinder fungus hunt now......

Which ones do you prefer, the string gasket or the rubber o ring type? I ask, because the first one I ever saw, was an older horn model, that used waxed thread as a gasket, and it worked well in the hands of the owner, but I never really mastered.

Fast forward 20yrs, they seem to be all the rage, and I've tried to build them, and buy them, but until I got this one, I've never had one that worked everytime like this. I'm up to 20 tries, and so far, everyone has lit. I've never had this much success with them.

Numyth gets my thumbs up for anyone asking, from now on.

I have 6 or 7 of them. SOme are string, some o-ring. The o-ring may not be traditional, but they work a hell of a lot better. On the string gaskets, you have to make sure they are well lubed to work, otherwise, too much air leaks. O-rings are definitely more reliable. The ones I have are cocobolo, except for a buffalo horn one, and a stag horn one. I have a photo somewhere on here, but, I'm at work now, getting ready to go home.

Found the photos. Looks like I have 5, thought I had more than that. I do have one more, but it's a lemon:

Those look really cool but....wtf is a fire piston? Dang just when I finally though I knew it all.... Or maybe after I run a google search I will

oh yea ok, "The fire piston may have inspired Rudolf Diesel in his creation of the diesel engine around 1892."

I know all I need to now

The o-ring pistons pretty much fire every time. Many times I can get the string gaskets to fire the first time, but of course, not always.

Still WAITING on my flashlights to come in...

in the mean time I had 3 other things come in that I ordered after the flashlights...

why does it have to be thing you're most excited about take the longest??

its pretty sick because I've gotten a tent, camera and some abrasives and you think I'd been excited, but was disheartened they're not the lights.

ETA: after posting I thought, maybe I didn't click to send the snaps.. so I went to the site and sure enough it was paid on the 12th.... I've never been excited about a stupid flashlight, this is killing me...

That's always the way it goes, isn't it! I guess Heinz what right about good things are worth waiting for. Of course, ketchup isn't one of those things. But I digress...

Why oh why didn't I get a BK16 sooner?

Been using the heck out of the one I won at the NE Beckerhead gathering. So perfect.

I get the feeling that participation in the contest for those BK24s is going to be a lot higher than other recent contests.

So, I got a question, mostly for the the more tech savvy heads, but if others know the answer feel free.

Yesterday I got my mouse wheel stuck somehow and it wouldn't move, finally I clicked it down to see if that would fix it and I felt an unusually large click, I figured 'Ok, something got in there and is now out', then I went to sleep and when I got up today I found that my mouse wheel now just rolls forever unless you stop it with your finger... I can literally scroll from the top of my facebook news feed to the bottom in under 3 seconds.... Any ideas about what I broke?

Thats just how I like my mice...lol.One of my gateway mouses does that except it snaps back and forth between the two

Well, it's driving me nuts, I usually keep my middle finger on the wheel just because that's where it sits, so now it scrolls and the slightest movement, if I hold it in front of a box fan, it will spin like a windmill....
