" just 'cause " VS practical utility needs

Totally this!

Lets face it, we're knife nuts. That means we're obsessed with knives. We covet them, obsess over the latest and greatest, and spend way too much money on them. Members of our own families think we're weird.

For most of us who live in urban or semi urban suburban environments, almost all we need to cut can be handled with a cheap box cutter. The vast majority of the people in the world are not knife nuts, and everyday millions and millions of them go about their lives with no knife on them and they somehow live to tell the tale. No buffalo to skin, hostile Chinese paratroopers dropping out of the sky to deal with. No Walter Mitty fantasies. No need of much knife at all really, in our 21st century lifestyle.

But what fun is that?:D

Yes, I could get by with a nice flat little box cutter, and I have on some occasions. But I would miss the nice feel of jigged bone or rosewood. I would miss the almost sensuously smooth feel of a very sharp Opinel gliding through cardboard as I break down a box to fit in the recycle bin.

I once did an experiment carrying just a box cutter. It works but I felt weird, like I had walked out the house without my pants on or something. But the box cutter cut string, opened plastic blister packages, and broke down boxes. For heavy duty use I used my old Stanley 99. It did construction work and gardening. But I was bored. The only fail was on food use.

I ended up dropping my stockman back in my pocket. Just felt better.

It's all about need vs want. We don't really need all these knives. Just like the car nut don't need a Porsche to go down to the store or commute to work. It's just personal indulgence.

Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's knife!

Most mornings I'm not sure what I'm gonna carry so I go to the pile of proven knives, previous winners that I know will work.

I could spend my first cup of coffee choosing. ;)

That Coca-Cola one is awesome.

Heck if you wear a great big gray hat, they may think your Gandalf from LOTR.

I have been called Gandalf before (even though I was wearing no hat).
And on the way back from the Amon Amarth concert in Toronto, a crazy guy on the bus would not leave me alone until I admitted to being a wizard...at which point he said "I knew it."

Box cutter for boxes. Bantam for plastic bags to be opened. Marksman whatever I need quickly. Contego is heavy duty back up. Bushcrafter heavy duty primary, quickest access. I have BM on the left, Buck, Gerber, Leatherman on the right.

I cut cardboard, thread, string, cord, rope, nylon/plastic strapping, electric wire sheathing, paper, wood pallets, food, fabric, leather and I’m sure I’m missing a few more things. I work in a shop that sells/repairs/customizes industrial sewing machines.

Having multiple knives is handy. I shanked an arrow at 50 yds and hit a stump. Made a baton with Bushcrafter. Battonned until I got stuck. I’m on my knees fighting branches trying to dig my arrow out. Awkward angle. Grabbed my Bantam, cut a wedge out of green branch. Battonned wedge, split stump retrieved arrow and knife. Never moved an inch on my knees.

I like options, plural. Forgot about the TOPS Mini Scandi neck knife. More options, yay!

Heck with pocket clips.....Spyderco's going to have to come out with a new line of knives with Depend's- clips. :D
Just what every old fart needs!

Watched it with my nephew sometimes, didn't he put stuff in his diaper to help his friend with?

Thanks for that one HnS, I'd forgotten all about Tommy. :) I guess there's all kinds of crap in there! :poop:
