Just curious, how many do you have?

I could see myself easily, easily being a knife collector. In fact, it scares me a little. I can start obsessing over minute details of swedges and optimal blade configuration. I recently sold off some GECs, but between the knives I inherited from family and so couldn't sell, and the ones I carry, and the other ones here and there, like Rough Riders and Opinels and an SAK or two, I probably still have somewhere around 30. Basically 12 or so that I might carry, or won't get rid of because I know I'd kick myself too hard and never be able to replace them, and simply like them too much. And then all the others.

I tell folks that no amount is too small or too large. BUT, if have more than 6 and think you are smitten to get just 'one' more, be sure to start a record sheet of where you got the knife, when and how much. Then when you get to the point you say " I forgot I had that one" you can look at your record sheet. I didn't do that and am sorry all the time.

I think that 99% of us need to think about rehab, including me.

300Bucks (Its the model collected not the actual count)

This is really good advise to anyone who is fairly new to this madness. I wish I had started along time ago. I've thought about it many times and even started a data base once.

Every time I see one of these "how many do you have?" threads, I tell myself I really need to start cataloging what I have, and the other items 300Bucks mentioned.

If I had to guess I think I have somewhere north of 200 and south of 300. A combination of custom folders and fixed blades as well as manufactured folders.

In terms of traditional folders only (including SAKs), I started the year with about ten and am finishing with about 20. I'm not a collector. What I had at the beginning of the year were all things I had picked up over the course of decades. Then earlier this year I saw a little Uncle Henry (USA) stockman and thought it would be fun to have. Wanting to learn more I started reading about the history of Schrade, then got interested in other brands (such as Vic and Case and Rough Rider). I bought a Case to see how I would like it, then a Rough Rider for the same reason, then a Vic because I thought I needed that particular model, and it just went on from there. I really have everything I "need" so I doubt if I'll buy a lot more in 2018, but we'll see how it goes. ;)

Fixed blades maybe ten and about four inexpensive "modern" folders.

Did a cursory glance this morning, and it looks like: 6 GECs, 20 Case, ~60 Traditional folders total, 15 Fixed blades total, and 5 modern folders. So, approximately 80 knives; which is about 25-30 less than this time last year.

Traditionals, um, 7. Add a leatherman and two fixies to that. One day I'll achieve my goal and get it down to a single folding pocket knife. :D

Clearly not enough yet;)

More than 2, but probably less than 250...

I'm like the Mafia, I don't like keeping too many incriminating records....plus I was never very good at counting things either:D

And, if I'm not counting I'm not stopping:cool:

I have probably 60 or so now but most are in the budget range. I try to spend my limited knife-funds wisely and buy used and only when it's a really good deal. I've also purchased bulk lots of Swiss Army Knives, maybe 15 or so with the sole purpose of giving them to people that need a knife but aren't into it like us. Most non-knife people can still appreciate a real SAK for the tool it is and have thus far been very well received. Wow I just realized I'm down to 5 from 15 I better stock back up!

That's what I said many moons ago about hunting rifles....

My guestimate numbers of traditional fixed blade and folders, is about 125 to 150.
They being a part of what I call my 'Man Gadget Collection' (basically an assortment of gadgets that us men have often gravitated towards since we were little boys). My knife numbers are just a part of my overall do-dad collection.

This thread inspired me to "mentally" update my spreadsheet.
I estimate that I currently have X knives, 220 < X < 240. All traditionals - no fixed blades (oops, I DO have a Mora 120), no modern folders.
I expect that number will only continue to grow, as I buy new ones with my $1/day knife budget. I can't imagine getting more enjoyment from a buck a day than I received from my knives over the past 4 years! :D The only question is how fast the number grows. Will I continue to buy knives that average about $10 each (so maybe 30-40 per year), or will I start buying more expensive knives, but fewer of them??
(I seldom try to sell any of my knives, since so far I've tended to buy inexpensive ones and probably couldn't sell them for much over what it would cost to ship them to a buyer. I have some more expensive knives, but they're almost all gifts that I won't sell.)

Wel you just made me admit to myself that I am definitely a collector haha
I probably have about 40 at least, I think 30 or so of them have been carried and used at some point. The rest were my grandfather's, who actually got me interested in knives when he passed away and I was given several of his sharp things when he passed when I was around 8. Out of that 30 I think I carry/use about 15 on a regular basis. However this is all my knives, and including modern folders which I only go through phases in which I carry. The only one I carry regularly is my case trapper which is with me almost all the time, or sitting at my workbench where it gets used a bunch. Including that there is a group of about 6 or so that I rotate in and out throughout the month depending on my mood though I occasionally get in a rut where I carry only one knife for over a month at at time. I also have a mora that lives in the kitchen. But I do carry nearly ALL of my knives that wernt my grandfathers (minus a couple of my antique knives) at least a couple times a year.
