Just got 4 CF/ZDP Caly 3.5's, not a single one of them has a straight blade...

John, I wasn't trying to be an arse. I'm browsing on my phone at the moment and it was hard for me to tell on my phone. I'll be looking for your video on my You Tube sub list to get a better look on my computer.

My question is: How the blades got bent in the first place?

I'm no expert on knife-making, but does Spyderco hand-grind the grinds on these or are they done via some sort of CNC machine? I know they hand-grind the bevel, so that was my first thought as to how a knife could be warped in such a strange manner, but I don't know that the blade on the Caly 3.5 (3mm correct?) is thin enough to bend under the force of just grinding the bevel..

Hopefully Sal will see this and if it is a wide-spread problem, correct it.

Sure you can. Just put it between 2 sheets of plywood and hammer the ever loving crap out of it.
I thought you were joking at first, but you can be the one to buy a $175 and start hammering the ever loving crap out of it. Be sure to make a video of it!

Ahh sorry brother. I guess the overall tone of the thread had me being defensive. :)

Meh. That looks fine to me. I'd actually use the knife tho'.

Take a picture of the blade between the handles when the knives are closed.

Donate one of those bad boys to yours truly here. I'll make use of it. As stated earlier (and subsequently being insulted for it) I would love to have one of these, bent blade and all, but it's out of my budget right now. It got squeezed out by limited budget and other upcoming models that I have been coveting. Saving for the Damascus version, the Tuff and maybe another Al Mar.

I don't think they are hand ground, otherwise they would be customs and about 2-3 times the price. If they were CNC'd they would be classified as midtechs and again, be more expensive. The blades might be warped from heat treat (that would be my guess).

Here is two crappy cell phone pics. Very hard to capture, that's why I'm doing a video.

ETA: That ruler is square, made by PEC.

CTS, I had a Kershaw OD-1 that had a tip that looked bent like yours in the bottom pic. I sent it off to Kershaw, and they fixed it so that it looks perfectly straight. On mine it appeared to me that when they ground the blade the grind was off on one side and made it appear bent. I'm not sure how they fixed it. But, it sure looks straight now. It is disappointing that you ran across 4 with the same problem. However, problems like this aren't isolated. I went through 4 Case Trapperlocks before I got one that had no blade play. All were in the same store. So, I'm wondering if several more in the batch that your 4 came from may have problems with blades.

I have the same problem with my Chokwe, but the entire knife (Looking down the end to the tip) Bends slightly to the left. I'm guessing it happened during the quench after HT but I have no idea how the handle got bent. I don't wail on the knife so I'm guessing it's from the factory. I would like to send it in but I've taken it apart. Just thought I'd chime in since I have a similar problem.

Ah, you are correct sir. Heat treat sounds like a logical explanation to me.

yeah the material will warp during heat treat but they are ground after heat treat so they should be true, seems like they werent properly annealed, perhaps the process used wasn't the best for ZDP, and there was internal stresses in the material that caused it to warp during grinding

Do you not own a hammer and some wood?

I lol'd

Anyways, thanks for the pics. It's great to see a badly derailed thread get back on track. I'll be honest. I was kinda reading it for a laugh, but was pleasantly surprised :)

So, my 2 cents:

If that's a store you frequent and like and like the people there, ya might give them a courtesy call, just let them know that you had the problem and are working with spyderco, but if they have any in stock, they might want to check em. I know a bit about a heat treat, but all my metal and knife working experience (which isn't much) is with 1095, single quinch. These super steels are space aged stuff way far ahead of what I've done, so I don't think I got anything in the ticker that'd be very useful.

Hi CTS,

Sorry for your frustration. It seems you have several options; You can return them to your dealer for a refund. You can return them to your dealer for replacements. You can send them to Spyderco.

To the fanbois.

This forum is here to discuss Spyderco knives. The good and bad.

If there is a production issue with this model, Spyderco would like to know about it.
Sal has said in the past, the forums are here for this purpose and more.

Absolutely Rob. Thats what they are here for. Thats why we are here... It is a knife forum. It is a great way for manufacturers to get input on their products, especially when there may be a problem they are unaware of. Some people get very touchy when anything negative is posted about their favorite knife company.

I think he was just trying to understand the logic behind buying 4 of the same knife.

There doesn't need to be any logic. It isn't anyone elses business as to how many knives a person buys. To me, that just shows jealousy.
Would the problem be any different if he had only bought one knife, and it had a bent blade ?
